Chарtеr 6 (2/20)

Gоng Shаngjuе’s сold voiсе рrеssеd down like a wеight: “Вrother Ziуu, this is no longеr а triviаl mаttеr, is it?”

Тhe atmоsphere in the hall instantlу grеw tensе.

Seеing Yun Wеishаn sрeесhlеss, Shаngguаn Qian wаlked up to hеr with аn eхpression оf disbelief, grаbbed her hаnd, аnd sаid аgitаtеdlу, “Miss Yun, havе уou dесеived us аll?…” As shе sрoke, shе subtlу guided Yun Wеishan’s fingers to рress against hеr оwn Рulse Gаte and whispеrеd sоftly, “Dо it nоw!”

Yun Wеishаn lооked аt Shаngguan Qiаn, so сlose аt hand. Shе knеw thаt if she асtеd nоw, she could immеdiately take Shаngguan Qian hostаge, and thеre wоuld still bе a slivеr of hope… But after a moment of hesitation, she calmly shook off Shangguan Qian’s hand.

Shangguan Qian drew a sharp breath, surprised. In contrast, Yun Weishan regained her composure and looked at Gong Shangjue, her eyes welling up with faint tears.

“I grew up in the Yun family in Pear Stream Town. I saw the painter’s portrait—it was meticulously detailed in both appearance and expression. Neighbors and household servants couldn’t possibly fail to recognize that the portrait was of me. I don’t understand why the servants answered that way. Unless you showed them a different portrait…” She insisted firmly, without any sign of relenting. “If Second Master Gong insists on questioning my identity, then just kill me or detain me. I have nothing more to say. I am Yun Weishan, the eldest daughter of the Yun family in Pear Stream Town.”

Though she appeared calm on the surface, her palms were already damp with cold sweat.

A shadow fell diagonally before her, darkness enveloping her. Yun Weishan’s heart pounded like a drum, and she clenched her teeth. Gong Shangjue slowly walked toward her. For a moment, everyone grew tense, and as he moved, Gong Ziyu also moved, subtly shifting two steps to stand in front of Yun Weishan, shielding her.

This was the person he had chosen. Even if there were issues, it should be him who questioned her. Moreover, as he observed Yun Weishan’s expression, all he saw was the innocent look of someone backed into a corner.

Gong Shangjue stopped in his tracks, somewhat disdainful of Gong Ziyu’s actions. “Why are you so nervous?” He then turned to Yun Weishan and changed his tone: “Miss Yun’s identity has been verified. That was merely a test just now. Please understand—after all, you are the bride chosen by Brother Ziyu, so we naturally had to be extra cautious.”

So it was just a test.

Yun Weishan felt as though she had been drowning in the sea, suffocating, and suddenly broke through the surface, air rushing back into her lungs. Her still-chilled back pressed tightly against her clothes, soaked in cold sweat.

Jin Fu, standing nearby, had already put away the scroll in his hand. Receiving a glance from Gong Shangjue, he silently retreated to the side.

That day in Pear Stream Town, the old woman had shaken her head, indicating she didn’t recognize the person in the portrait. Jin Fu was about to send the news back to the House of Gong.

Then, a young woman approached from behind the old woman. Seeing the portrait, she smiled and said, “Isn’t this Miss Yun Weishan? Has Granny’s eyesight worsened with age? This portrait is so well done…”

Hearing this, the old woman leaned closer to the portrait and took another look. “Oh my, it really is Shan, the girl…”

Only then did Jin Fu nod to his attendant, confirming that Yun Weishan’s identity was genuine.

Now, Yun Weishan let out a sigh of relief, and the tears she had been holding back finally fell, making her look pitiful and touching. It seemed just as she had guessed—Wufeng was unwilling to lose her as a pawn, so they had found a way to solidify her identity.Only Shangguan Qian, standing to the side, had a complex expression hidden beneath her cascading hair, her eyes flickering with a faint light.

Gong Shangjue paused, as if remembering something: "Oh, right, Miss Yun, after you left home, your mother has been deeply concerned. My subordinates have already conveyed to her that you are doing well at the House of Gong. Madam Yun has a message for you: she says, you are fortunate to have safely entered the Gong family..." He glanced at Gong Ziyu, "...and to have been chosen by Ziyu. You truly have great fortune and fate. Miss Yun, by Young Master Yu's side, you must serve him wholeheartedly."

Yun Weishan merely held back tears, saying nothing.

Gong Ziyu’s gaze shifted toward her. Seeing her aggrieved expression, a faint ache stirred in his heart, and he couldn’t help but speak up to comfort her: "It has already been concluded—Yun Weishan’s identity is not in question."

Wufeng. A murderous caw echoed as a flock of crows swept past the black eaves.

Han Ya Qi stood leisurely in the dim corridor, arms crossed. As Han Ya Si passed by, he straightened up.

"I heard the House of Gong has sent people to Pear Stream Town again to make inquiries."
