Almost Lover

Chapter 59

Chapter 57: Cai Hong

After finishing their meal, Ruan Yu really wanted to stroll along Chang'an Street, but her legs were too sore—the aftermath of the three-kilometer run hit her in waves.

On the way back, she fell fast asleep in Teng Yi's car.

By the time she woke up, the sky had already darkened.

Opening her eyes, Ruan Yu found Teng Yi's car parked outside the Xiyou Street Dance Training Center, its convertible top tightly closed with only two slight gaps in the windows. Teng Yi's jacket was draped over her, but he himself was nowhere to be seen—she had no idea when he had left.

Gathering her thoughts, she tried to push the door open but realized she was locked inside.

"Teng Yi!" She slapped the window from inside and shouted.

Cai Hong was sitting on the steps by the entrance, playing a game. Hearing the noise, he quickly stood up, dusted off his baggy jeans, and ran over to unlock the car for her.

"You're awake."

"Yeah. Why are you out here?" Ruan Yu pushed the door open and stepped out, leaving Teng Yi's jacket in the car.

"Boss told me to keep an eye on you here."

"Where is he?"

"Upstairs, practicing. Wanna go up and sit for a bit?"

Ruan Yu checked her watch and shook her head.

"No, I need to get back to campus."

"Then I'll take you. Boss said to make sure you get back safely once you woke up."

"Don’t trouble yourself. I can just take the bus."

"How is that trouble?" Cai Hong jingled the car keys in his hand. "Driving a luxury car to escort a beauty? Couldn’t ask for more. Besides, I have to make sure you get back safe, or I won’t be able to answer to Boss."

With that, he slid into the driver’s seat.

Ruan Yu had no choice but to follow.

Cai Hong’s driving was noticeably more cautious than Teng Yi’s—maybe because it wasn’t his car, or maybe because the car was just too expensive.

"Heard your school had a sports meet today?" Cai Hong asked.

"Your school?" Ruan Yu couldn’t help but wonder. "You’re not a student at Yangshan?"

"No way I could get into a top-tier uni like yours." Cai Hong rested his hands on the steering wheel, rubbing the row of tattoos on his fingers with slight embarrassment. "I didn’t even make it to college."

Ruan Yu was surprised.

Wasn’t Cai Hong a student at Yangshan? She distinctly remembered seeing him during the university’s anniversary celebration.

"I saw you performing at the anniversary event."

"That was an opportunity Boss got for me. Thanks to him, a vocational school grad like me got to pose as a college student and dance for you guys."

"You danced really well," Ruan Yu said sincerely.

"Thanks." Cai Hong grinned.

When he smiled, two small dimples appeared on his cheeks, softening his roguish demeanor and making his grin seem especially pure and bright.

"How did you and Teng Yi meet?"

"At a street dance competition. Boss was a judge, and I was a contestant. I totally bombed that day… Ugh, don’t even remind me—total black mark."

"Speaking of competitions, he seems to be preparing for something big lately. I’ve noticed him practicing day and night." Ruan Yu treaded carefully, probing for information.

She had wanted to ask for a while but feared that prying too much might give away her schoolgirl crush."Yeah," Cai Hong said casually, completely unaware of her little thoughts. "The boss is about to compete in the Red Eagle Street Dance Competition. It's a battle-focused Breaking competition and the most coveted stage for most B-Boys and B-Girls in the street dance scene."
