Almost Lover

Chapter 50

Chapter 48: You're Not Fainted

The boy carried Ruan Yu as he sprinted ahead, with Jian Xiangxiang, Cai Zhi, and the others trailing behind, quickly falling behind. The scene turned bizarre—those who knew might think he was acting heroically, while those who didn’t might assume he was kidnapping someone.

Jostled in his arms, Ruan Yu felt as if her organs were being rattled loose. The dizziness from the three-kilometer race surged back, and she couldn’t help but reach out, lightly gripping the hem of his shirt.

The boy noticed the movement and glanced down at the small, pale hand.

"You're not fainted?" His voice came from above, tinged with surprise and hesitation.

Ruan Yu immediately realized her mistake and quickly let go, letting her hand dangle limply at her side. But now, releasing it only made her pretense more obvious.

"You're not fainted," he repeated, this time with certainty.

As he spoke, his pace gradually slowed until he came to a complete stop.

Unable to keep up the act, Ruan Yu had no choice but to open her eyes.

The two stared at each other—one looking up, the other down—strangers with a hint of wariness, yet locked in an oddly intimate embrace.

Awkward.

"Um..."

"Um..."

They spoke simultaneously, then fell silent again.

Another wave of awkwardness.

"You first," the boy said.

Ruan Yu hesitated, then asked in a pleading tone, "Could you... do me a favor and keep this a secret? And then take me to the infirmary?"

The boy froze.

Sunlight glinted over them as the girl in his arms blinked earnestly, her brown pupils like translucent amber.

Footsteps approached from behind.

"Please," Ruan Yu whispered.

"..." He still didn’t answer.

"What’s wrong? What happened?" Cai Zhi and the others caught up.

Ruan Yu hurriedly shut her eyes again.

The boy studied her—her face, her hands—taking in every detail. She lay limp in his arms, like a wilted jasmine flower.

Small and pale, yet fragrant all the same.

"Well? Why’d you stop?" Cai Zhi pressed.

Jian Xiangxiang and the other two held their breath, their eyes fixed on the boy, terrified the lie would be exposed.

"Nothing. I just suddenly forgot where your school’s infirmary is."

Wait, he wasn’t from their school?

No wonder he looked unfamiliar—he must be from Hongshang University.

"Seriously, man! You don’t even know where the infirmary is, yet you ran ahead like that?" Cai Zhi scolded, then pointed toward the passage behind the podium. "Come on, follow me!"

The boy nodded and followed.

Jian Xiangxiang and the others exhaled in relief.

The passage behind the podium was narrow, and their large group ended up blocking a petite girl coming the other way.

"Ruan Yu?" The girl recognized her and, seeing her pale face and closed eyes, guessed it must be due to the three-kilometer race.

"Yeah, yeah, move aside, quick!" Cai Zhi urged.

Fainting after a long-distance run could be serious.

"Oh, right!"

The girl quickly pressed herself against the wall to make way.

The group surged past in a rush.
