Almost Lover

Chapter 49

Chapter 47: Fainting

"Fifth!"

Ruan Yu stumbled forward, caught by Jian Xiangxiang and Chen Manbai as they rushed to meet her.

"Don't sit or lie down immediately—help her walk around first!" shouted the school's PE teacher from nearby.

Jian Xiangxiang and Chen Manbai supported Ruan Yu as they made their way toward the center of the soccer field. Xia Qiaofeng followed close behind, holding a bottle of water.

"Ruan Ruan, what happened? Didn’t we agree you’d run three laps and then fake a fainting spell?" Jian Xiangxiang asked.

"Exactly," Chen Manbai grumbled, displeased. "Did you forget we’re trying to mess with You Lexuan? Why did you push yourself so hard?"

Ruan Yu gasped for breath.

She remembered—of course she did. This had been her idea in the first place. But the moment Teng Yi cheered her on, she suddenly changed her mind.

No matter what, once she stepped onto the track, it became a competition.

She didn’t want her own prank to undermine the spirit of sportsmanship, disrupt the rhythm of the other runners, or interfere with the event itself.

"So what do we do now? Just let You Lexuan off the hook?" Jian Xiangxiang asked.

"There’s still time," Ruan Yu said, licking her pale lips. "Find out where the homeroom teacher is and take me over there."

"What are you planning?" Xia Qiaofeng asked.

"Fainting."

Jian Xiangxiang and Chen Manbai exchanged glances, immediately grasping Ruan Yu’s intention. Their deflated enthusiasm instantly reignited.

"Three o’clock direction, Stand C—target spotted," Jian Xiangxiang announced in a tone mimicking a crime drama.

The other two pressed their hands to their ears as if wearing earpieces, playing along perfectly.

"Copy that!"

"Move out!"

Ruan Yu: "..."

Homeroom teacher Cai Zhi was standing near Stand C, chatting with a boy in a white T-shirt. Both looked to be in high spirits.

The moment Ruan Yu and her three friends approached, Cai Zhi’s gaze locked onto them.

"Ah! Our class’s superwoman returns!" Cai Zhi strode forward, clapping as he walked. "Ruan Yu, tell me—is there anything you can’t do? You’ve really brought honor to our class!"

"Mr. Cai, I didn’t even win a medal."

"Medals don’t matter—what counts is participation! Just finishing the race is impressive enough. And I heard the runners ahead of you were all from the school’s athletic team. That means if there hadn’t been any professional competitors, you’d have taken first place!"

"Thank you, Mr. Cai—"

Before she could finish, Ruan Yu’s legs gave way, and she collapsed.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Cai Zhi yelped in alarm.

"Ruan Ruan! Ruan Ruan! What’s wrong?"

Jian Xiangxiang and the others joined in the shouting, each one’s acting more convincing than the last.

Nearby students quickly gathered around.

"Get her to the infirmary, now!" Cai Zhi yelled.

At that moment, Ruan Yu felt herself being lifted effortlessly—someone had scooped her up in a bridal carry.

Who the hell was this meddling third wheel?

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Jian Xiangxiang’s startled cry rang in her ears. Unlike her earlier exaggerated performance, this time her voice carried genuine shock.

But why did that shock sound so… odd?

Ruan Yu kept her eyes shut, unable to see who was holding her. All she could feel were the person’s strong arms and broad chest as they began running. Despite the added burden of carrying her, their strides remained swift and steady.

The wind rushed in from all sides.Ruan Yu caught the scent of the boy, clean and fresh like bamboo after the rain.
