Almost Lover

Chapter 29

Chapter 27: Puppy Love

Ruan Yu got out of the car and followed Teng Yi into Huafu Residential Area.

Walking one after the other, they didn’t speak. When they reached the villa’s entrance, Ruan Yu heard that familiar piano melody again. It drifted from an unknown direction, sometimes near, sometimes far.

As she glanced around, Teng Yi, who was walking ahead, suddenly stopped.

Ruan Yu couldn’t brake in time and bumped into his back with a soft thud. The tip of her nose brushed against his jacket, and the faint scent of soap from his clothes filled her breath.

She quickly stepped back.

Teng Yi turned around and saw her rubbing her forehead.

“Did it hurt?” he asked.

Ruan Yu shook her head, though she couldn’t help grumbling inwardly—why was his body so hard?

His gaze shifted away from her and landed on the pot of jasmine by the door. “It bloomed.”

The quiet remark was drowned out by the piano music.

After saying that, Teng Yi went inside.

Ruan Yu remained standing there, staring at the fresh green leaves sprouting from the jasmine branch and the delicate little white flower. She took out her water bottle from her bag, crouched down, and watered it.

Over the past half month, the first thing she did every day upon arriving was water this withered branch. Watching it gradually regain signs of life gave her a sense of accomplishment. Of course, what made her even happier was that Teng Yi had noticed the first little white flower blooming today.

She reached out a finger and gently stroked the tiny blossom.

Hang in there.

She silently encouraged it.

By the time Ruan Yu entered the house, Teng Yi was no longer in the living room.

She closed the door and went upstairs.

Teng Hao’s door was slightly ajar, and it swung open with a light knock from Ruan Yu.

She stepped inside to find Teng Hao sitting on his bed, fiddling with a gift bag. When he saw her, he hastily stuffed it under the covers.

“What are you looking at?” Teng Hao snapped.

“What are you hiding?” Ruan Yu walked to the desk, pulled out the chair, and sat down. “I already saw it—it must be a gift for a girl.”

“None of your business!”

Teng Hao climbed off the bed, his face red, and nervously adjusted the blankets again.

Seeing Teng Hao like this for the first time, Ruan Yu couldn’t resist teasing him further. “Are you… in puppy love?”

“Shut up!” he retorted, flustered. “Keep talking nonsense, and I’ll tell Mom to fire you.”

“On what grounds? For discovering your puppy love?”

“Shut your mouth!” Teng Hao raised his voice, stepping toward her aggressively. “Giving someone a gift means puppy love? You—you obviously have no experience with dating.”

Ruan Yu’s attempt to tease him backfired, and her own secret was exposed. She fell silent.

Seeing her reaction, Teng Hao knew he had hit the mark. A triumphant sense of turning the tables washed over him, and his expression shifted from panic to smugness.

“Hah! So you’ve really never been in love? What, you’re in college now—don’t you even have someone you like?”

Ruan Yu’s thoughts wavered for a moment.

Before she could answer, Teng Hao suddenly called out, “Bro!”

Ruan Yu looked up to see Teng Yi standing at the door—she hadn’t noticed when he arrived. He had changed into a black T-shirt, black pants, and even his slippers were black.

At a glance, he seemed noticeably leaner.

Her eyes met Teng Yi’s, and she quickly looked away, inexplicably feeling a little guilty.

She wondered if he had overheard their conversation.
