Chapter 28

Chapter 26: Evening News Broadcast

Ruan Yu ultimately didn’t accept Tian Cheng’s money, but she promised him that if she ever faced real difficulties in the future, she wouldn’t hesitate to ask for his help.

After leaving the publicity office, she headed straight to the north gate to catch the bus.

Teng Hao had a birthday party to attend at eight that evening, so they had agreed to move their tutoring session an hour earlier.

Bus 527 wasn’t too crowded at this time, with plenty of empty seats available. Ruan Yu chose a spot by the window, put on her headphones as soon as she sat down, and began watching a pre-downloaded video on her phone with focused attention.

The bus stopped for about a minute as passengers gradually boarded. Soon, a figure settled into the seat beside her. The presence felt oddly familiar, and when she turned her head, her eyes widened in surprise.

It was Teng Yi.

“Hey!” Teng Yi greeted her.

“Why are you taking the bus?” Ruan Yu asked, puzzled.

“Why can’t I take the bus?” He chuckled. “Did the bus company blacklist me?”

That wasn’t what she meant.

After all, everyone at Yangshan University knew Teng Yi commuted in and out of campus in a sports car. That sapphire-blue Maserati, much like its owner, was legendary.

“You haven’t done anything wrong—why would anyone blacklist you?”

“True. I’m a law-abiding citizen who never does anything bad.” He joked while glancing at his watch. “Why are you heading back early today?”

“Teng Hao has plans tonight,” Ruan Yu replied.

He nodded but didn’t press further.

The two fell silent, sitting side by side. Ruan Yu resumed watching her video, but her thoughts were anything but focused. Her peripheral vision kept drifting toward Teng Yi beside her.

Teng Yi leaned back in his seat, eyes slightly closed, completely relaxed, as if he had fully settled into rest mode.

Ruan Yu took advantage of her lowered gaze to discreetly study his long legs bent at the knee, the slight peek of his socks, and those pristine white sneakers that looked almost spotless.

They were so close that whenever the bus jolted, their sleeves would brush against each other. The faint contact seemed to go entirely unnoticed by him, yet it steadily quickened her heartbeat.

The wind whistled through the window, sweeping strands of her hair toward him. She regretted not bringing a hair tie but was glad she had washed her hair that morning.

Teng Yi slept the entire ride, while Ruan Yu remained cautious the whole time. It wasn’t that she feared waking him—it was just that their proximity made her self-conscious. Fortunately, the bus soon reached their stop. When the announcement played, Ruan Yu gently tapped Teng Yi’s shoulder.

He opened his eyes.

“We’re here,” she said.

Teng Yi nodded, his gaze instinctively shifting toward her as she closed the video on her phone. He caught a glimpse of the screen and realized she had been watching the Evening News Broadcast the entire time.

“The Evening News ?” Teng Yi asked.

Ruan Yu followed his line of sight to her phone and understood his question. “Yeah,” she answered.

“What’s your major?” he asked.

“Broadcasting and Hosting.”

As they spoke, they made their way to the rear exit.

The bus had already come to a stop. Ruan Yu stood quietly beside Teng Yi, waiting for the doors to open. The cabin was nearly silent when suddenly, she heard him say, “Keep it up.”

The rear doors slid open with a whoosh , and the fragrance of apricot blossoms from the street outside rushed in to envelop her.Ruan Yu turned her head to look at Teng Yi, who had already stepped off the bus ahead of her.

She had thought that watching the News Simulcast on the bus would make her seem like a strange person in his eyes. Yet, with just a few words, he seemed to have already understood her aspirations.

Yes, she wanted to become an outstanding program host in the future—and she was working hard toward that goal every single day.
