In the early Tang Dynasty, noblewomen riding horses would normally wear a "veil" or "veiled hat." This type of concealing attire originated from the Western Regions, originally intended for protection against wind and sand. In the Central Plains, its primary purpose was to shield from prying eyes and to signify one's status. However, in this chapter, the two daughters of the Chai and Wei families were riding horses in the palace through the snow, wearing veiled hats to shelter from the snowfall. The mural in Consort Yan's tomb at Zhaoling depicts a maid holding a long silk-net veiled hat.
