This novel was inspired by a brief but authentic entry in the History of Ming concerning Zhu Zhanji, the future Xuande Emperor:

“In the fourth month of summer, because Nanjing was repeatedly struck by earthquakes, he was ordered to remain there as guardian. In the fifth month, Emperor Renzong fell ill and summoned him back by imperial decree. In the sixth month, upon reaching Liangxiang, he received the emperor’s final edict and entered the palace to announce the mourning.”

Behind these few terse lines of history lies a far deeper story. What truths were left unwritten? And whose hand truly shaped the historical record?

Racing through the night along the Grand Canal, with enemies closing in from every side and his life hanging by a thread, the Crown Prince embarks on a desperate journey that will determine the fate of the empire. Along the way unfolds a fierce contest between imperial authority and popular will, a deadly struggle of intrigue within both court and bureaucracy, and the tangled resentments and loyalties forged over decades. Beneath it all lies a profound exploration of the human heart, from the noble to the base.
