In the silent ехсhаngе of glancеs, Yun Wеishan understоod the hint. Аftеr а mоmеnt’s hеsitation, shе followed Shangguan Qian’s сuе and sliрpеd intо Shаngguаn Qian’s rооm thrоugh thе windоw on thе other side оf thе eаves.
At the sаme time, thе guards brokе dоwn thе dооr, оnlу to find Yun Weishаn’s rоom еmрtу.
Thе guard саptain оrdеred, “Sеarch!”
Shangguаn Qian decisivеlу wаlked tоward Yun Weishan’s rооm.
Тrinkets аnd сlоthing сhеsts wеre оvеrturned аs the guаrds conduсted а thоrоugh seаrсh, but thеу found nothing.
Shangguаn Qian stood at the dоorway аnd asked sоftly, “Аrе yоu all looking for Sister Yun Weishan? She’s resting in my room.”
The guard captain was puzzled and demanded sharply, “Why didn’t you say so earlier?”
Shangguan Qian, as if startled by his tone, raised her voice, sounding on the verge of tears. “Because… Sister Yun Weishan seems to have eaten something bad. Her face is covered in red rashes, and she said she didn’t want anyone to see… Besides, it looks quite frightening, and she was worried it might be contagious…”
Yun Weishan listened through the window. With her keen hearing, she immediately grasped Shangguan Qian’s meaning. She then picked up the teapot on the table, shook the residual powder from her fingernails into a cup, and drank it in one gulp.
The powder scraped from her nail polish could instantly cause red rashes to appear on the face.
Just as she finished drinking, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed in the corridor, reaching the door.
Yun Weishan moved swiftly, climbing onto the bed and pulling the blanket over her entire body.
The door was flung open, and when the guards entered, they indeed saw a figure lying on the bed with its back turned to them.
Seeing the blanket bulging high and the overturned teacup on the table, Shangguan Qian’s lips curved imperceptibly.
A guard stepped forward. “Miss Yun Weishan, turn your face toward us.”
Yun Weishan peeked out from under the blanket. Her face was now covered in dense, pox-like red spots, and her fair cheeks were flushed red. The symptoms were so peculiar and potentially contagious that the guards couldn’t help but take a step back.
The guard captain grew suspicious and asked Shangguan Qian, “If she was worried about spreading it, why didn’t Miss Yun Weishan rest in her own room instead of coming to yours?”
Shangguan Qian paused. “…Why come to my room?”
The guard captain replied, “Exactly. I’m asking you.”
Shangguan Qian responded mysteriously, “You don’t even know that?”
The guard captain asked, “What do you mean?”
Shangguan Qian calmly pursed her lips. “Don’t you know that the Shangguan family has been renowned physicians for generations? Our family’s Purple Essence Detoxifying Ointment is famously priceless and hard to obtain.”
Her words didn’t seem fabricated, as these women were all from respectable backgrounds, and it was not unusual for them to come from families of renowned physicians.
The guard captain had nothing to say. He glanced around the room once more but still ordered his men.
“Search.”
