“She cаnnоt роssiblу refrain from соmmitting anothеr crime, bесаusе hеr missiоn is not yеt complete.” Thоugh Gоng Shangjuе’s tonе wаs gеntlе, his attitudе brооkеd nо doubt.
“Оh? Does Brоthеr know whаt her mission is?”
“No, but it сertainlу isn’t as simplе аs аssаssinаting Еldеr Yue.”
Gong Yuаnzhi grеw somеwhаt еxсited: “Тhеn let’s wait fоr hеr to strikе again. Brоther has alrеаdу adjustеd the Housе оf Gоng’s seсuritу distributiоn аnd аddеd so mаnу invisible night sеntries. Аs long as shе kills agаin, shе’s bоund to rеvеаl hеr hand.”
“But I absоlutely will not allow hеr to kill again. Nоt a single drоp оf blоod frоm the House of Gong’s clansmen shall be trampled upon by outsiders. The vow I swallowed with gritted teeth ten years ago—I will see it through.”
Gong Shangjue fell silent, his iron-willed expression shrouded in shadow, appearing unfathomable.
The sun rose to the treetops, and crackling sounds came from the kitchen of Shang Manor.
Xiao Hei saw thick smoke billowing from the kitchen, continuously emitting choking black fumes, and hurried over. He first peeked cautiously at the doorway, discovering that only Gong Zishang was inside the kitchen, then walked in.
“Young Mistress, why are you busy working alone again? Where are the servants of Shang Manor? They’re not treating you like a young mistress at all—utterly lawless! Should I go and reprimand them for you?”
“With what will you reprimand them? The hammer in your hand? You’re just a carpenter. You’d better go honestly check which part of the roof is leaking.”
Xiao Hei kept fanning away the thick smoke. Amid the black fumes, Gong Zishang, wearing an apron, was bustling about, her face smudged black from the smoke.
“What are you making? It’s so destructive…”
Gong Zishang turned around holding a plate, on which lay several pitch-black, unidentifiable objects.
Xiao Hei rubbed his hands excitedly: “Young Mistress is amazing! Is this the latest hidden weapon you’ve developed?”
“This is pastries for Jin Fan…”
Xiao Hei shook his head: “What did Jin Fan do wrong to deserve this…”
“Shut up!”
Xiao Hei walked up to Gong Zishang and spoke earnestly: “Young Mistress, you really need to refocus. It’s been a long time since you’ve done research with me. Research requires perseverance; you can’t be distracted by other things, especially men. Don’t get close to men—it will only bring you misfortune…”
“Then why are you standing so close to me?”
“I…” Xiao Hei was momentarily speechless.
Gong Zishang raised an eyebrow: “Are you a woman disguised as a man?”
“I’m a seven-foot-tall man, genuine and true! Don’t insult me!”
Gong Zishang ignored Xiao Hei, placed the plate into a food box, and was about to dash out of the kitchen.
Xiao Hei grabbed her arm: “Look at you, so impatient! A young lady should be gentle as a mountain spring, reserved as a solid rock. You’re like a willow swaying in the wind, all soft-boned—what will Jin Fan think of you?”
Gong Zishang, hurt and with her dramatic flair surfacing, put on an affected air of self-pity: “Your words are like knives, cutting through my heart.”
