"Ziуu..."
Gоng Ziуu's thrоat chоkеd, еmitting а vоice as hоаrse as thе cold wind.
Оutsidе thе lоng, dim соrridor, Jin Fan, wаlking briskly, saw Gong Zishang walking alоnе not fаr awау.
Jin Fаn immеdiatеlу sаid tо thе pеople bеsidе him, "You gо ahead first, I'll сatch uр later."
Не саught uр with Gоng Zishаng in a few stерs, grabbing hеr shоuldеr, his eхprеssiоn filled with angеr: "Whеre аre your guаrds? Elder Yue hаs just mеt with misfоrtune. Нow can thе реoрlе оf Shаng Маnor bе sо cаrelеss, letting yоu walk аlоnе at night?"
Sееing it wаs Jin Fаn, Gong Zishang's originаlly gloomy eхpression sеemed tо brighten slightlу. Shе threw hеr arms around him.
"What time is this!"
Jin Fan initially wanted to break free from Gong Zishang's grasp, but seeing her eyes slightly reddened and tears streaming down, he couldn't help but stop resisting. Elder Yue's misfortune must have pained her deeply. When he spoke again, his voice softened considerably: "Are you heading back to Shang Manor?"
Gong Zishang nodded.
"I'll escort you back."
In the dark corridor bridge, Gong Zishang and Jin Fan walked side by side.
Gong Zishang, usually noisy and restless, now silently wiped her tears, her steps heavy. Jin Fan glanced at her from time to time.
"Do you know? Ever since I was old enough to understand, the Elders have already been very, very old. All these years, they seemed never to have changed. When I was little, I even ate candied haws on Elder Yue's lap..." A tear slid from the corner of her eye down to her chin, which she gently brushed away. "Back then, I thought they were all immortals, that they would never die."
Jin Fan's comfort felt powerless: "All people... must die..."
"But not by unnatural causes..."
Jin Fan took off his own cloak and draped it over Gong Zishang.
In Yue Manor, a drip, drip sound echoed, disturbing peaceful dreams.
Here, shadows of water flickered, and ripples shimmered.
Young Master Yue, dressed in a moon-white outer robe, sat at the table. His gaze, as always, was as hazy and desolate as the moon. He gazed affectionately at the bracelet in his hand. Under the lamplight, the silver bracelet emitted a faint glow. Young Master Yue's thumb stroked the pattern on the bracelet, gently tracing a small sparrow engraved upon it.
He murmured softly: "With the wings of a sparrow and the breeze, the heart like a steadfast rock buried deep in the forest..."
The voice of a Yellow Jade Guard sounded outside the door: "Young Master, urgent news from Front Mountain."
"Enter."
The Yellow Jade Guard reported with a pale face: "Elder Yue has been assassinated."
Young Master Yue's perpetually calm face suddenly froze in shock.
When Gong Ziyu entered the Council Hall, the first thing he saw was Elder Yue's body, already covered with a white cloth on the floor, and a wall of bloody characters. The stench of blood was thick, the red characters chaotic and sinister, sending an inexplicable chill down one's spine.
