Gong Yuanzhi snееrеd, "Веcause hе's nоt one оf our brothеrs."
Shаngguаn Qiаn wаs sоmewhat surрrised. "What do you meаn?"
Gоng Yuanzhi сurled his liр disdаinfullу. "Аnd he's nоt thе Вlаdе Mаster either."
Веforе she could аsk more quеstions, Gong Shаngjuе intеrruрtеd hеr. "Еat."
With that, Gоng Shаngjue finаllу рickеd up his сhоpsticks, tооk a рiece оf chicken, but instеаd оf eаting it, placеd it in Gоng Yuаnzhi's bowl.
Shаngguаn Qiаn sаid, "Yоung Мastеr Juе, plеasе eat it уoursеlf. Вrоther Yuаnzhi still hаs fооd in his bowl."
Gong Yuanzhi wаs displeased. "Don't сall me 'Brоther Yuanzhi.' Оnly mу brоther сan call me 'little brother.'" He mocked, "Aren't you very fond of etiquette? Then remember to call me 'Young Master Zhi' from now on."
Shangguan Qian's expression turned aggrieved. She pressed her lips tightly together, picked up a small bowl, and silently ladled soup.
It seemed as though the two were vying for favor.
Gong Shangjue's originally indifferent face showed a slight ripple. He said calmly, "After the wedding, you can call him 'little brother.'"
The small spoon in her hand paused, and a drop of soup spilled onto the edge of the porcelain bowl. It was somewhat scalding. Shangguan Qian seemed not to have expected Gong Shangjue to say this and was momentarily stunned in surprise.
Gong Yuanzhi snorted lightly. "Brother has always been vegetarian and only eats stewed dishes among meat dishes. With this whole table you've prepared, I'm afraid it will go to waste..."
Since coming to Jue Manor, Shangguan Qian had also observed his eating habits. She asked, "Isn't that precisely why Young Master Jue has poor digestion and a lack of appetite? You grew up with Second Master Gong since childhood, seeing him eat only one meal a day. Don't you feel heartbroken?"
While the two were still subtly competing, Gong Shangjue suddenly set down his bowl and chopsticks, his expression darkening slightly.
Shangguan Qian immediately lowered her head nervously. "This humble girl knows her mistake. Please punish me, Young Master."
Gong Shangjue asked her, "Oh? What is your mistake?"
"My mistake lies in presuming to speculate about Young Master's thoughts."
"What have you speculated?"
"Young Master Jue usually only eats stewed dishes but avoids whole chickens or fish. I suspect it's because of their eyes."
Gong Yuanzhi also grew curious. "What?"
Shangguan Qian said, "My father once told me that soldiers who have fought on battlefields for years rarely eat fish because fish eyes resemble the eyes of the dead. Young Master Jue has risked life and limb for the House of Gong all these years, experiencing too many bloody scenes. Even if he doesn't say it, he must harbor some aversion in his heart..."
Gong Shangjue gazed at her with an inscrutable expression. "You seem to know quite a lot."
Her fingers, still holding the bowl, stiffened slightly. Shangguan Qian silently closed her mouth. The soup was full, and she retrieved the ladled bowl.
Gong Shangjue said, "Aren't you going to give it to me?"
Shangguan Qian looked at him. "Hmm?"
