Hearing this, Wang Pingzhang was slightly surprised. If he took Yangzhou, he and Luo Zishang would become mortal enemies. Liu Yu Ru had only this one request, which seemed extremely simple to him.
Wang Pingzhang couldn't help but say, "That's it?"
"There's more," Liu Yu Ru continued, "From now on, the Liu Family Business will be exempt from taxes in Yangzhou. All official purchases in Yangzhou must first choose the Liu Family Business. Only if our business cannot handle the work can other merchants be selected. Of course, I won't shortchange you, Master Wang," she said, lowering her voice, "When the time comes, for all official work, I will split the profits with you seventy-thirty. Seventy for me, thirty for you."
Wang Pingzhang remained silent, thinking for a moment. Liu Yu Ru said slowly, "Master Wang can think it over carefully. I'm giving you money, giving you soldiers, helping you become the administrator of Youzhou, and will still split profits with you seventy-thirty in the future. You're essentially getting something for nothing. If you're unwilling, I can always choose someone else."
With money and soldiers at her disposal, Wang Pingzhang was indeed not her only choice. After weighing his options, Wang Pingzhang nodded, "Deal."
"Verbal agreements aren't binding," Liu Yu Ru said calmly, "It would be better to put it in writing."
At the mention of a written contract, Wang Pingzhang hesitated. Seeing his silence, Liu Yu Ru said directly, "Since Master Wang is unwilling, perhaps we should see our guest out."
"Fine," Wang Pingzhang finally agreed. Liu Yu Ru immediately had someone bring paper and brush, and they drew up the contract together.
After the contract was signed, Chen Xun escorted Wang Pingzhang out of the inn. The light rain in Yangzhou hadn't stopped yet. After bidding farewell to Chen Xun, Wang Pingzhang boarded his carriage. As soon as he entered, his servant immediately said, "Sir, you signed a contract. What if they use it to expose you to Xiao Ming?"
"They won't," Wang Pingzhang shook his head, "With Youzhou and the Eastern Capital currently at a standoff, why do you think this lady came all the way to Yangzhou? Toppling Luo Zishang is their top priority."
"But... the Ye Family and Gu Jiusi are closely connected. Lord Wang died by Ye Yun's hand..."
The servant glanced at Wang Pingzhang as he spoke. Wang Pingzhang smiled, "What's most important?"
"Huh?"
The servant was puzzled. Wang Pingzhang leaned closer and whispered, "Money."
With that, Wang Pingzhang began to laugh.
After seeing off Wang Pingzhang, Chen Xun returned to the inn where Liu Yu Ru, Yin Hong, and Wang Lai were discussing something. Entering the room, Chen Xun said uneasily, "Yu Ru, do you think by supporting Wang Pingzhang, he might become the next Luo Zishang?"
"No."
Liu Yu Ru took a sip of tea and looked up at him, "We still have you, don't we?"
Chen Xun was taken aback. Liu Yu Ru turned to Wang Lai and instructed, "Send word to Jiusi to dispatch a team of soldiers here."
"What are your plans now?"
Wang Lai asked tentatively. Listening to the sound of the water clock, Liu Yu Ru said slowly, "We'll give Wang Pingzhang some time to make his arrangements. Shui Xiang, have your people introduce Master Chen to Madam Ji. Chen Xun, when you meet Madam Ji, you need to deliberately flatter her. Then tell her about Luo Zishang's situation in the Eastern Capital, and inform Madam Ji that Luo Zishang..." Liu Yu Ru pursed her lips before finally saying, "...is infatuated with me."Upon hearing this, everyone turned to look at Liu Yuru, who continued, "Once Jiusi's troops arrive in Yangzhou, after we forge Luo Zishang's token and Wang Pingzhang and Mr. Chen have made their preparations, I will take Jin'er and seek refuge with Xiao Ming under the guise of being Luo Zishang's wife and daughter. Xiao Ming will inevitably send a message to the Eastern Capital to inquire about Luo Zishang. With pigeon post, the round trip will take about two days. During these two days, I will provoke Madam Ji, and Wang Pingzhang will persuade her to join forces and kill Xiao Ming. After Xiao Ming's death, Yangzhou will surely fall into chaos. At that point, with Gu Jiusi's troops stationed outside to intimidate, and Wang Pingzhang and Mr. Chen's men cleaning up inside, within one night, Yangzhou will be decided—whether through surrender or execution."
"Understood."
Wang Lai responded respectfully and then went out to deliver the message to Gu Jiusi.
After Wang Lai left, Chen Xun knelt to the side, somewhat uneasy, and said, "I'm afraid Wang Pingzhang and I don't have that many men."
"Do you think Wang Pingzhang and I have been raising so much money for nothing?" Liu Yuru looked at Chen Xun with a faint smile. "Money can make the devil turn the millstone—it all depends on whether you know how to spend it. Wang Pingzhang must have been heavily bribing Yangzhou's generals. He knows how; don't you? Besides the generals, there are always poor commoners, mountain bandits, and outlaws who will do anything for money. If you really can't find anyone, why not go ask at San De's gambling den?"
Chen Xun was taken aback for a moment, then as if suddenly enlightened, said, "I understand! I'll go find a way right away!"
Before Liu Yuru's message could reach Youzhou, news of the uprising in Youzhou had already spread throughout the land.
However, Zhou Gaolang had not publicly declared the uprising. His actions were very restrained: he merely gathered Youzhou's troops, quickly captured the four border cities adjacent to Youzhou in Jizhou, and stationed his forces at the border.
After that, he advanced no further. Everyone was speculating about Zhou Gaolang's intentions, and the whole world watched the situation, seemingly unclear about what Zhou Gaolang was plotting.
But within the Eastern Capital, Luo Zishang and Fan Yu understood Zhou Gaolang's meaning better than anyone else. Zhou Gaolang's secret letter had arrived in the Eastern Capital, clearly stating that as long as Fan Yu returned all members of the Zhou family in the Eastern Capital, he would immediately withdraw his troops and henceforth garrison Youzhou, repaying the emperor's grace.
When the secret letter reached Fan Yu, Luo Zishang read it aloud to him. After hearing it, Fan Yu sneered coldly, "Repaying the emperor's grace... repaying the emperor's grace? How dare he defy the imperial decree, kill my envoy, and march troops into Jizhou in full view of the world! This treacherous rebel is not here to beg me—he clearly intends to revolt!"
"Your Majesty, please calm your anger," Luo Zishang said respectfully. "There is still room for maneuver in this matter."
"What room for maneuver?" Fan Yu glared at him coldly. Luo Zishang replied gently, "The only leverage we have over Zhou Gaolang now is the Zhou family. If we hand them over to him today, Zhou Gaolang will immediately raise the banner of rebellion, and we will have no means to retaliate."
"I know that," Fan Yu said impatiently. "Stop wasting words."
"Your Majesty, Liu Xingzhi is still in Yizhou."
"So what?"
"With Great Xia in turmoil, Liu Xingzhi will not stand idly by. He will surely send troops into Great Xia. What if we deploy Zhou Gaolang to the front lines?"
Hearing this, Fan Yu looked up at Luo Zishang, frowned, and said, "What do you mean?""Currently, the border between Great Xia and the Southern Kingdom is guarded by the late emperor's elite troops. Most of them only have a general understanding of the current situation in the Eastern Capital. Your Majesty should recall all frontline troops to the Eastern Capital now. This way, if Zhou Gaolang intends to forcibly seize the Eastern Capital, Your Majesty will have some means to respond."
"What about the frontline then?"
Fan Yu hesitated. Luo Zishang smiled: "Let Zhou Gaolang go."
"He wants the Zhou family members—we are not refusing. Send Zhou Gaolang to the frontline. After he repels the foreign invaders, we will return his people."
"After returning them, he will still rebel!"
Fan Yu roared angrily: "What kind of foolish suggestion is this!"
"After returning them, how many troops will Zhou Gaolang have left?"
Luo Zishang's eyes held profound meaning: "Your Majesty, by then, Your Majesty's forces will be in the Eastern Capital, with Yangzhou on the flank. Zhou Gaolang will have Liu Xingzhi ahead of him. When they exhaust each other, we can attack from behind. With enemies on three sides, does it still matter whether we return the Zhou family members or not?"
Hearing this, Fan Yu was stunned. After a moment, he couldn't help but ask: "What if he refuses to go?"
"If he doesn't go to the frontline, shouldn't Your Majesty summon the feudal lords to return to the Eastern Capital and fight Zhou Gaolang to the death?"
Luo Zishang said matter-of-factly: "Does Your Majesty believe that with the current Eastern Capital forces, without help from frontline lords, we can still confront Youzhou? Moreover, Jiang He's whereabouts remain unknown, and the Eastern Capital itself may not be stable now."
These words from Luo Zishang made Fan Yu anxious. As he grew restless, Luo Zishang continued: "Your Majesty, recalling troops from the frontline means losing only a few cities. Then we can garrison forces in the Eastern Capital. I'll have Yangzhou assist from the rear, pinching Zhou Gaolang between us. Meanwhile, we can send envoys to negotiate peace with Liu Xingzhi, ceding one province to him. After Your Majesty deals with Zhou Gaolang and secures the throne, we can recuperate and plan for greater things. Your Majesty is benevolent and considers the bigger picture, but you must never sacrifice your life for the sake of the overall situation."
Hearing this, Fan Yu gradually calmed down.
Luo Zishang was right. Recalling his father's old troops and sacrificing the frontline was much better than facing Zhou Gaolang directly with Eastern Capital forces.
After some thought, he nodded: "Do as you say. Recall the southern frontline commanders Yang Hui, Wei Dacheng, and Sima Nan with their troops to the Eastern Capital. Then send the Zhou family members to Jizhou to show Zhou Gaolang, making him obediently go to the frontline."
"Your Majesty is wise."
After receiving Fan Yu's approval, Luo Zishang withdrew. Leaving the hall, he instructed people to send out the messages one by one, then whispered to Ming Yi: "Our plan—find someone to secretly leak it to the Zhou family, especially to Zhou Ye's wife, that Lady Qin."
Hearing this, Ming Yi was puzzled: "Why are you doing this?"
"Also send a message to the Southern Emperor," Luo Zishang said leisurely, "Everything is proceeding as planned. When the Eastern Capital confronts Zhou Gaolang, he should immediately attack Yuzhou."
Ming Yi wasn't surprised. He nodded and withdrew.
Luo Zishang stood by the palace railing, gazing at the Imperial City.
Compared to Liu Xingzhi and Fan Xuan, Yangzhou was merely a tiny territory. No matter who won, he wouldn't be able to establish himself.
Fan Xuan had strong troops and capable ministers assisting him. Given time, Liu Xingzhi would inevitably be defeated. Once this balance was broken, Yangzhou would be finished.
He needed an opportunity.
From entering the Eastern Capital, repairing the Yellow River, destroying the cabinet, to now closing the net...
Though there were some mishaps, they didn't matter much.Luo Zishang calculated slowly before closing his eyes.
The wind carried the moist freshness after the rain, and as Luo Zishang breathed in the scent of rainwater, he recalled the drizzling rain at the Yangzhou docks.
Gu Jiusi was in Youzhou, but where was Liu Yuru?
He thought—being by Gu Jiusi’s side was truly a waste of her potential.
If she could survive, if she were willing to survive...
Luo Zishang’s thoughts abruptly ceased, and he opened his eyes.
Given the current situation, he could no longer afford to dwell on such matters.
The heavy rain had washed over the land, and everywhere was quietly awaiting news. Pigeons flew into the dovecote one by one, and servants retrieved messages from them, delivering each to the study.
In the study, Gu Jiusi flipped through scrolls while studying a map. Shen Ming sat nearby, silently observing the map. Gu Jiusi glanced at him and asked with a smile, "What are you looking at?"
"I’m thinking," Shen Ming frowned, "with such major movements in Great Xia, won’t the neighboring countries, especially Liu Xingzhi, have any ideas?"
"Youzhou borders Northern Liang," Gu Jiusi explained. "You and Brother Zhou have already crushed Northern Liang this past year. They’re temporarily unable to march, and with both sides relatively stable now, there’s no need to worry for the time being."
Shen Ming nodded, and Gu Jiusi continued, "As for Liu Xingzhi, he has always been cautious and timid. The southern border is guarded by three of Great Xia’s top generals and natural barriers. Unless our side descends into complete chaos, Liu Xingzhi won’t dare to act. Even if we do end up fighting, it would be difficult for him to breach the front lines immediately. And if he does manage to break through, we should have already secured the Eastern Capital by then. At that point, it would be an official war between the two nations."
"If war truly breaks out between the two countries," Shen Ming leaned in and asked seriously, "what are our chances of success?"
Gu Jiusi fell silent for a moment before slowly replying, "The late emperor’s ambition to conquer the south has always been present. Our military supplies and soldiers are well-prepared. Since the Yellow River was repaired, water transport has been smooth, ensuring timely provisions and reinforcements for both supplies and troops. Our soldiers and commanders have been tempered in the battles against Northern Liang in Youzhou. Compared to a local bully like Liu Xingzhi, we can be considered strong and well-equipped. If it comes to war, Great Xia has nothing to fear."
Hearing this, Shen Ming breathed a sigh of relief. Gu Jiusi lowered his head, studying the map on the table, as Shen Ming said, "Then it should be alright."
"But there is still the worst-case scenario," Gu Jiusi spoke slowly. Shen Ming looked up at him, tense, and asked, "What is it?"
Before Gu Jiusi could answer, a guard hurried in with a scroll of message and presented it to him, saying, "News from the Eastern Capital."
"Bring it here."
Gu Jiusi quickly reached out, took the scroll, and scanned it hastily. His brow furrowed. Shen Ming watched him closely and asked, "Ninth Brother, what does the message say?"
"The Zhou family’s dependents have left the Eastern Capital and are being transported to Jizhou."
"Are they planning to return them?" Shen Ming asked happily. Gu Jiusi remained silent, thinking for a moment before saying, "Send people to investigate. Spare no effort to rescue the Zhou family’s dependents."
Upon receiving the order, the guard respectfully withdrew. Shen Ming immediately said, "I’ll go."
Gu Jiusi looked up at the eager Shen Ming, pursed his lips, and then said, "You have other tasks to attend to."
"What tasks?"
Shen Ming fell silent. Gu Jiusi set down the letter, stood up, and slowly walked outside.
Beyond the corridor, the sky was overcast with dark clouds, as if a storm was brewing. Gu Jiusi stood at the edge of the corridor, gazing in the direction of the Eastern Capital.A thread of clarity gradually formed in his mind, as if he could see everything Fan Xuan had once envisioned.
Leaving Luo Zishang in Yangzhou to manage the national treasury, repair the Yellow River, pacify Yongzhou, allowing Liu Yu Ru to develop the Liu Family Business, and settling the Zhou family in Youzhou...
He didn't know whether Fan Xuan had done this intentionally or unintentionally, but everything he had accomplished seemed to address all the challenges they now faced. However, Fan Xuan was, after all, only human, and there were too many variables. He had never anticipated that his son would turn out to be such an emperor.
Gu Jiusi closed his eyes. After a long while, he slowly opened them and finally spoke: "Prepare yourself. Tomorrow, you will go to Yangzhou."
"Tomorrow?"
Shen Ming was taken aback. Gu Jiusi nodded, offering no further explanation, and simply said, "Go and rest. I need to see Brother Zhou."
With that, Gu Jiusi made his way to Zhou Ye's room.
Zhou Ye was in his room with his child, Zhou Siguì, who was crawling around on the bed. Zhou Ye watched expressionlessly, seeming somewhat weary.
After announcing himself, Gu Jiusi entered the room and saw Zhou Ye sitting on the bed. He called out, "Brother."
Zhou Ye snapped out of his daze, turned to look at Gu Jiusi, and gave a bitter smile. "Jiusi."
"Today, I received news that Zhou Madam and the young master have been escorted toward Jizhou. Based on the timing, they will reach Linfen in two days."
Hearing this, Zhou Ye visibly perked up, a hint of disbelief in his tone. "Fan Yu agreed to release them?"
"I'm afraid there are conditions."
Gu Jiusi spoke bluntly. Zhou Ye stiffened momentarily before steadying himself. He glanced at Zhou Siguì and said, "That's fine. As long as there's room for negotiation, it's a good sign."
"If I'm not mistaken," Gu Jiusi said calmly, "Liu Xingzhi might take this opportunity to invade. They will withdraw troops from the Yuzhou front to reinforce the Eastern Capital, then use Zhou Madam as leverage to force us to go to Yuzhou."
"They want us and Liu Xingzhi to weaken each other?"
Zhou Ye caught on immediately. Gu Jiusi nodded. "Yes."
"Luo Zishang's intention is likely to have us confront Liu Xingzhi on the front lines while they mobilize forces from Yangzhou to strike from behind."
Zhou Ye fell silent. Gu Jiusi studied his expression and continued, "But Yangzhou won't make a move this time. As for the Eastern Capital's forces, it largely depends on the stance of the three generals in Yuzhou."
"How can you be so sure Yangzhou won't act?"
Zhou Ye seemed puzzled. Gu Jiusi replied, "That's why I came today. I want to borrow thirty thousand troops from you, Brother Zhou."
"For what purpose?"
"Yangzhou may soon face internal turmoil. I want to borrow thirty thousand men to seize the opportunity and take Yangzhou."
Zhou Ye hesitated at this. After a moment, he said, "Thirty thousand is no small number."
"Brother Zhou, do you still want to rescue Zhou Madam?"
Gu Jiusi looked at him intently. "I've already sent people to try and rescue her and the others, but they are heavily guarded. It won't be easy. If we fail, our only option is to agree to their terms and go to Yuzhou."
"In that case, wouldn't we be caught between two fronts?"Zhou Ye frowned disapprovingly, but Gu Jiusi immediately countered, "At this moment, Fan Yu won't attack us. Not only will he refrain from attacking, he might even offer support to help us deal with Liu Xingzhi. He'll wait until we've weakened each other before striking. And if Fan Yu does come for us then, we'll have Yangzhou turn around and attack him instead."
"This way, we can both save Madam and protect our territory."
After considering these words, Zhou Ye nodded. "Agreed."
"I'll have Shen Ming dispatch thirty thousand troops today."
Gu Jiusi spoke urgently, surprising Zhou Ye. "So soon?"
Gu Jiusi nodded. "Yuru's plan is unfolding now—it's a matter of extreme urgency."
"Well..." Zhou Ye hesitated briefly, but being decisive by nature, he finally said, "Go ahead."
Acknowledging the order, Gu Jiusi took the command token from Zhou Ye and withdrew. He found Shen Ming, handed him the token, and instructed, "Take thirty thousand soldiers to Yangzhou. Assist Yuru in securing the city."
Shen Ming accepted the token. "Understood. You can count on me."
As he fastened the token to his belt, Shen Ming looked up at Gu Jiusi with a smile. "Any messages for your wife?"
Gu Jiusi froze at the question. His lips parted as if to speak, but after a long pause, he simply said, "Tell her not to worry. I'm doing fine."
"Alright," Shen Ming nodded, turning to leave.
"Shen Ming!"
Gu Jiusi's sudden call made Shen Ming glance back in confusion. Stepping closer, Gu Jiusi lowered his voice to a whisper only they could hear: "After taking Yangzhou, proceed immediately to Yuzhou. Ignore any other orders—only follow mine. Can you do this?"
"Brother Jiu..."
Shen Ming was stunned. Gu Jiusi gripped his wrist tightly, staring intently. "Can you do it?"
Shen Ming remained silent, studying Gu Jiusi's face. The latter's voice grew more urgent: "Liu Xingzhi will surely attack Yuzhou. If all goes well tomorrow, Brother Zhou and I will reinforce you. But if circumstances change... Brother Zhou might have other priorities. You must hold Yuzhou at all costs. Understand?"
Yuzhou was Great Xia's most strategic natural fortress. Losing it would make counterattacks nearly impossible.
"I only have thirty thousand troops," Shen Ming reminded him. Against Liu Xingzhi's full force, holding with such numbers seemed implausible.
"I know," Gu Jiusi continued. "There are fifty thousand more in Yangzhou. With eighty thousand total, just hold Yuzhou for one month—I will reinforce you."
Shen Ming stayed quiet. Gu Jiusi looked up. "Any other questions?"
"Brother Jiu," Shen Ming pressed his lips together. "Are you hiding something from me?"
Gu Jiusi stiffened, surprised by Shen Ming's perceptiveness. Lowering his gaze, he finally murmured after a long silence, "This battle... might have a worst-case scenario."
"What scenario?"
"That Luo Zishang... has been working for Liu Xingzhi all along."Upon hearing this, Shen Ming was completely stunned. Gu Jiusi quickly analyzed, "I've been wondering all along why he came to the Eastern Capital. After arriving, he kept engaging in minor conflicts with us. He claimed to have surveyed the water conservancy while accompanying the Crown Prince on the eastern inspection when repairing the Yellow River, but now I realize he was only there for such a short time—how could he produce such a comprehensive renovation plan? It was clearly premeditated. And later, he encouraged Fan Yu to abolish the cabinet through such radical means while Zhou Gaolang was still in Youzhou, which was completely unwise. But what if he's Liu Xingzhi's man?"
"Or perhaps, from the very beginning, he had allied with Liu Xingzhi, came to the Eastern Capital, became the Crown Prince's Imperial Tutor, then created conflict between the Crown Prince and Zhou Gaolang. When the Crown Prince ascends the throne and clashes with Zhou Gaolang, he would collude with Liu Xingzhi to attack Yuzhou, while he stirs trouble from within, causing Great Xia to engage in internal strife. After Great Xia is weakened by infighting, they would then confront Liu Xingzhi. At this point, Luo Zishang would stand by and watch, waiting for the critical moment to strike and reap the spoils. By then, the entire realm would belong to Luo Zishang."
Shen Ming, listening to Gu Jiusi's words, grew somewhat anxious: "Then what should we do now?"
"So, you go to Yuzhou," Gu Jiusi said calmly. "If Luo Zishang is truly as I suspect, then," his voice lowered, "I fear he won't let the Zhou family dependents live."
"Why?" Shen Ming was shocked. "What does this have to do with the Zhou family dependents?"
"Only when the Zhou family dependents are all gone will the Zhou family completely break with Fan Yu. What Luo Zishang wants is for Great Xia to ignore the border and focus solely on internal conflict. By now, he has likely withdrawn all frontline troops to fortify the Eastern Capital. His intention in sending the Zhou family dependents to the border was never to release them."
"Then... what does he plan to do?"
Shen Ming's voice faltered. He already understood, but he couldn't believe it and needed confirmation. Gu Jiusi's voice was grave: "He merely wants the Zhou father and son to witness their loved ones die tragically, to provoke their fury."
"So you want me to go to Yangzhou, then divert to Yuzhou," Shen Ming murmured. "Have you told Brother Zhou about this?"
"I cannot," Gu Jiusi said calmly. "If I did, you wouldn't be able to take these thirty thousand troops."
"After this happens, Brother Zhou will quickly figure it out. What will you do then?"
Shen Ming urged anxiously, "Why don't you come with me!"
"Things haven't reached that point yet," Gu Jiusi raised his hand. "This is the worst-case scenario. Luo Zishang might not be as I suspect. Moreover, I've already made arrangements. It all depends on tomorrow," Gu Jiusi looked up toward the sky, his voice carrying a weight of solemnity, "whether we can save Zhou Madam."
"If we can save her, all will be well. If not, as long as Zhou Madam doesn't die, I can persuade Lord Zhou and Brother Zhou to join us in defending Yuzhou against the enemy—that would still be a path to survival. If it truly comes to the worst, you just focus on guarding Yuzhou. I have my own ways."
"I understand."
Shen Ming nodded and immediately said, "I'll set off now."
"One more thing," Gu Jiusi pressed his lips together, then said, "Regarding what I've told you," he hesitated for a moment before continuing, "don't tell Yuru. Once Yuru stabilizes Yangzhou, have her go to the Yellow River. Tell her that Luo Zishang's reason for repairing the Yellow River is definitely not simple—he's likely tampered with it somehow. The most critical natural barrier in Yuzhou, Shounan Pass, is downstream of the Yellow River. Have Yuru find a way to deal with it."
"Alright."
Shen Ming responded, "I understand. You're afraid Sister-in-law will worry about you."
Gu Jiusi gave a low acknowledgment. Seeing there was nothing else to discuss, Shen Ming took his leave. That very night, he mustered thirty thousand troops and hurried toward Yangzhou.Meanwhile, Gu Jiusi sat in his room, holding a brush as he wrote letters throughout the night. He would crumple the letters after writing them, then start anew. The two characters "Yu Ru" were written countless times at the beginning, yet he could never bring himself to finish.
By the time he finally completed the letter, dawn had broken.
At the same time, the women of the Zhou family finally set foot on the soil of Jizhou.
The carriage rocked and swayed as Qin Wan Zhi attended to Zhou Madam and Second Young Master Zhou inside. Zhou Madam looked exhausted and remained silent, while the second young master, running a low fever, leaned against her.
After giving the second young master some water, Qin Wan Zhi whispered, "I wonder how much longer it will be until we see our husband."
Zhou Madam said nothing. Qin Wan Zhi sighed and turned to her, asking, "Mother-in-law, are you alright?"
"I won't die," Zhou Madam replied hoarsely.
Hearing her dry, raspy voice, Qin Wan Zhi handed her some water and said gently, "Mother-in-law, have some water. We'll reach Linfen tomorrow and see our husband then."
Zhou Madam remained silent for a moment before slowly saying, "You drink. It's been a while since you had any."
Qin Wan Zhi was taken aback. She hadn't expected Zhou Madam to offer her water. Their relationship as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law had always been strained, yet in this time of hardship, Zhou Madam was showing her kindness for the first time. Her eyes grew moist, and she responded with a muffled sound before lowering her head to take a small sip.
Zhou Madam glanced at her and, after a moment's thought, slowly asked, "Do you think I despise you?"
Qin Wan Zhi stiffened at the question. She lowered her gaze and softly acknowledged without denying it.
Zhou Madam turned away and said calmly, "I do despise you."
"I never liked Ye'er," Zhou Madam continued, her voice even. "My relationship with his father was poor. When he was alive, he often beat me. When I was pregnant with Ye'er, I thought several times about killing him, but I could never bring myself to do it. Later, when I gave birth, I nearly died."
Zhou Madam had never spoken of these things before. Qin Wan Zhi listened quietly without interrupting. Zhou Madam went on, "Then one day, I couldn't take it anymore. I killed that man and fled. Gao Lang found us and took me and my son in. That was the first time I felt like I had come back to life."
"Ye'er looks very much like that man," Zhou Madam said, turning to Qin Wan Zhi. Unable to hold back, Qin Wan Zhi replied, "But he is not that man."
Zhou Madam paused, then lowered her eyes and acknowledged, "Yes, he is not. When he was young, I was afraid Gao Lang wouldn't like him, so I didn't dare get too close. And whenever I looked at him, I felt he was reminding me of that shameful past. Gao Lang urged me many times to take better care of him. At first, I thought he was just saying it in anger, but later I realized that if I didn't care for Ye'er, Gao Lang would step in and do it himself."
"He was very endearing as a child."
Zhou Madam seemed to recall something. "He was always well-behaved, doing everything properly and always thinking of others. Once, when my skirt trailed on the ground, he came running over to hold it up for me. He was only four or five years old at the time, and he said to me, 'Mother, your skirt is dirty. Let me hold it for you.' I asked him how long he could hold it, and he said, 'I can hold it for you for a lifetime.'"Qin Wanzhi listened, thinking of Zhou Ye from that time, and felt a pang of sorrow in her heart. She wanted to reprimand Zhou Madam but held back out of respect for her elder, only saying tactfully, "If he hadn't suffered hardships, how could there be a child so naturally adept at caring for others?"
Zhou Madam remained silent for a moment before responding, "You're right, he did suffer. At first, I wanted to protect him and hoped Gao Lang would grow closer to him, so he wouldn't mind my past. I deliberately neglected him and let Gao Lang take care of him. Their bond deepened, and then I gave birth to Ping'er. After Ping'er was born, my life became smooth, but Ye'er drifted further away from me. He rarely spoke to me, only offering a respectful greeting each day before leaving. But Ping'er was different—he grew up by my side, the embodiment of all my efforts. I wished all the good things in the world for Ping'er, but then I realized Ye'er was too outstanding. He was too exceptional and much older than Ping'er, and I grew afraid."
"Afraid he would seize the second young master's position and inherit the Zhou family in the future, is that it?"
Hearing this, Qin Wanzhi couldn't help but laugh, her laughter tinged with sorrow. "But he never had such thoughts."
"Who knows?" Zhou Madam said listlessly. "If he truly didn't, why did he put on such a show in front of his father?"
"Later, he indeed succeeded. Gao Lang had long anticipated this day for the Zhou family, so he sent him to Youzhou early on. Back then, I asked why it was Ye'er who went to Youzhou and not Ping'er? He told me it was because Ye'er was more suitable."
"How absurd," Zhou Madam said wearily. "Neglecting his own son to care for an outsider's child. He even raised him as an heir, leaving his own son in the Eastern Capital as a hostage while sending Zhou Ye to Youzhou to live comfortably."
As she spoke, Zhou Madam let out a mocking laugh. "What magnanimity!"
Qin Wanzhi listened, her heart aching with bitterness. After a long silence, she slowly asked, "Why are you telling me all this?"
"Do you think Fan Yu would simply let us return?"
Zhou Madam looked up at Qin Wanzhi, who was taken aback. Staring into her eyes, Qin Wanzhi said earnestly, "No, everything comes at a cost. That's why I told Gao Lang long ago that if I ever became a hostage, I wouldn't make things difficult for him."
"I feel the same, and so does Ping'er. What about you?"
Qin Wanzhi didn't respond, staring blankly at Zhou Madam. Zhou Madam lowered her head, holding Zhou Ping, and said calmly, "Gao Lang taught me how to live like a person. I can't let him regret saving me, nor can I let him endanger himself for my sake."
"As for whether you stay or go—"
Zhou Madam murmured, "You decide for yourself."
Qin Wanzhi remained silent as the carriage jolted along from day to night, finally arriving in Linfen.
They entered Linfen City and were imprisoned in a dungeon. Qin Wanzhi didn't sleep all night, hugging herself as she gazed at the sky outside.
In the middle of the night, commotion erupted outside. Qin Wanzhi sprang to her feet, and Zhou Madam, holding Zhou Ping, stood up in confusion. "What's happening?"
Qin Wanzhi listened intently for a moment before exclaiming excitedly, "Someone—someone has come to rescue us!"
Hearing this, Zhou Madam quickly stood up and hurried to the cell door, still holding Zhou Ping. The commotion outside grew increasingly chaotic. Moments later, a man burst into the prison cell, leading others to seize Qin Wan Zhi, Zhou Madam, and Zhou Ping. They were roughly forced to their knees, blades pressed against their necks, as the man shouted toward the outside, "Take one more step forward, and I'll chop their heads off!"
The rescuers who had come to break them out halted at these words, seemingly hesitating.
But Zhou Madam suddenly erupted with fierce determination. Clutching Zhou Ping, she lunged forward. In that instant, the man showed no hesitation—with a swift raise and fall of his blade, he severed Zhou Madam’s head.
Blood splattered across Zhou Ping and Qin Wan Zhi’s faces. The two stared in horror at Zhou Madam’s fallen body before them. Zhou Ping, just a child, sat in the pool of blood, his eyes wide with shock. The man holding the blade pointed it at Zhou Ping but lifted his gaze to the rescuers, taunting, "Care to try running again?"
Everyone was stunned by the scene.
They all knew the Zhou family’s women were being used to threaten Zhou Gaolang, but no one had expected this man to have the audacity to actually kill Zhou Madam!
After a brief moment of shock, the rescuers quickly made a decision and retreated. The soldiers guarding the prison immediately gave chase, and soon, only Qin Wan Zhi, Zhou Ping, and the young man who had killed Zhou Madam remained in the cell.
Qin Wan Zhi remained kneeling on the ground, as if all her strength had drained away. Zhou Ping sat in the blood, and after a long while, he slowly came to his senses. Letting out a piercing scream, he scrambled on all fours to a corner, clutching himself tightly and trembling uncontrollably.
"My name is Wen Yi," the young killer said calmly, wiping the blood from his blade with a white silk cloth. He used the tip of the sword to lift Qin Wan Zhi’s chin, smiling faintly. "If Zhou Ye doesn’t agree to His Majesty’s terms tomorrow, I’ll send you and that young master on your way just like that."
"You…" Qin Wan Zhi trembled, "What do you want him to agree to?"
"No harm in telling you—it’s not like he has a choice anyway."
Wen Yi bent down, leaning close to Qin Wan Zhi’s ear, and whispered, "Liu Xingzhi is attacking. His Majesty wants the Zhou army to confront the enemy in Yuzhou. Once they’ve finished off Liu Xingzhi, His Majesty will personally lead his forces to send them to their graves."
At these words, Qin Wan Zhi’s eyes widened in shock.
She understood clearly: Liu Xingzhi was launching a full-scale invasion, and Fan Yu must have withdrawn the frontline troops, sending Zhou Ye to resist the enemy. Once the Zhou family’s forces were sufficiently depleted, Fan Yu, with his strengthened army and alliance with Luo Zishang’s forces from Yangzhou, would strike—and it would all be over.
"Do you think they’ll trade for you?" Wen Yi tilted his head, as if genuinely curious. After a moment, he sheathed his blade, picked up a clay pot from nearby, and handed it to Qin Wan Zhi. "Young Madam, have some water to soothe your throat. Tomorrow, on the city tower, you’ll have a chance to speak a few more words with the eldest young master."
With that, he laughed heartily and strode out.
Zhou Madam’s blood slowly spread toward her. Qin Wan Zhi sat in the pool of blood, and after a while, trembling, she crawled forward and straightened Zhou Madam’s clothing.
After a night of turmoil, Gu Jiusi also received the news. Holding the report of Zhou Madam’s execution, his heart grew heavy.
Shortly after, word came from outside. A servant informed Gu Jiusi, "Lord Gu, everything is ready. Lord Zhou requests that you prepare to depart."Gu Jiusi nodded, clutching the note in his hand, momentarily uncertain whether to share this information.
He rode to the city gate where Zhou Gaolang and Zhou Ye were leading the vanguard. Gu Jiusi approached and bowed respectfully. Zhou Gaolang nodded and said, "Let's go."
With Zhou Gaolang at the forefront, Zhou Ye close behind, followed by Gu Jiusi and Ye Shi'an, and other generals aligning their troops in formation behind them, they hurried toward Linfen.
As they reached the foot of Linfen's city walls, war drums echoed from above. Archers nocked their arrows. Zhou Gaolang gestured with his chin toward Gu Jiusi, who immediately urged his horse forward, positioning himself before the city gate and calling out clearly, "I've heard the Zhou family members have all arrived in Linfen. Has His Majesty finally seen reason? Does he intend to return the Zhou family and reconcile with us, restoring our former lord-subject bond?"
"Treacherous Gu! How dare you act so arrogantly before the imperial envoy?!"
The shout from the walls came from Wei Lin, Linfen's original defending general.
Gu Jiusi smiled. "Minister Wei, you're advanced in years and speaking must be strenuous." He raised his hand. "I request the envoy from the Eastern Capital step forward to speak with me!"
"Are you calling me?"
Wen Yi emerged from the side. Gu Jiusi studied him briefly, recalling having seen him near Luo Zishang. Wen Yi, aware Gu Jiusi might not recognize him, saluted respectfully. "I am Wen Yi of the Palace Command. Greetings, Lord Gu."
"Since an official from the Palace Command has come, I presume His Majesty has reached a decision?"
"His Majesty says," Wen Yi smiled, "women, children, and the elderly are all innocent. Involving them is improper. Lord Zhou's desire to reclaim his family is understandable. However, Lord Zhou remains guilty of rebellion. Simply releasing them would be unjustifiable."
"What does he want then?"
Zhou Ye couldn't restrain himself, scanning the surroundings anxiously. Wen Yi's gaze settled on Gu Jiusi as he declared, "With Liu Xingzhi invading Yizhou, Lord Zhou should go to the front lines and repel him. Use this merit to atone for your crimes. Then His Majesty can release them."
Silence fell over the crowd. Zhou Ye glanced at Gu Jiusi—Wen Yi's words aligned exactly with Gu Jiusi's prediction. Running through Gu Jiusi's advice in his mind, he stepped forward and whispered to Zhou Gaolang, "Father, we should agree for now."
Zhou Gaolang looked at Zhou Ye. They had discussed this possibility the previous night. After a moment's thought, he raised his head toward Wen Yi. "Defending Great Xia is our duty. But what if His Majesty goes back on his word?"
"Rest assured," Wen Yi proclaimed. "March to Yuzhou. Once you arrive there, we will release the hostages. You may verify the news before engaging in battle."
Ye Shi'an snorted coldly at this.
If their army reached Yuzhou, Liu Xingzhi would surely perceive them as reinforcements. Would he even give them the choice to fight or not? He'd likely attack immediately.
Zhou Gaolang found some reassurance in Wen Yi's proposal and nodded. "At least allow this old man to see his family and confirm their safety."
Hearing this, Gu Jiusi tensed. His hand instinctively went to his sword as he stepped forward.
Wen Yi showed no fear upon receiving the request. He raised his hand and commanded, "Bring them up."
All watched as Qin Wan Zhi and Zhou Ping were escorted onto the walls under guard.Qin Wanzhi had a cloth gag in her mouth, her body bound with ropes, her hair disheveled as she was shoved forward, stumbling along. Zhou Ping followed behind her, head bowed and trembling.
Upon seeing them, Zhou Ye immediately stepped forward but was grabbed by Ye Shi'an, who shook his head and said, "Any further and we'll be within arrow range."
Zhou Ye forcibly restrained his impulse, his gaze fixed intently on Qin Wanzhi atop the city wall.
When Qin Wanzhi saw Zhou Ye, she had been despairing and panicked. Yet, the moment she met his resolute eyes, she instinctively straightened her back.
Suddenly, she was no longer afraid.
She tightened her grip on the tile shard in her hand, quietly watching Zhou Ye in the distance. Her gaze was both greedy and earnest, as if trying to etch this person into her eyes.
"Lord Zhou," Wen Yi stood beside Qin Wanzhi and called out loudly, "Now that you've seen her, perhaps it's time for you to set off for Yuzhou."
Zhou Gaolang remained silent, his eyes fixed on the city wall. After a long while, he finally spoke, "Where is my wife?"
"Last night, intruders broke in," Wen Yi said casually. "Zhou Madam unfortunately lost her life."
Upon hearing this, Zhou Gaolang's face changed drastically. He tightened his grip on the reins and roared in fury, "You vile brat! Give me back my wife's life!"
With that, he urged his horse forward, but Zhou Ye quickly grabbed him, anxiously and fearfully saying, "Your second son is still there!"
Zhou Gaolang froze at these words, his gaze falling upon the trembling child on the city wall. His eyes were bloodshot, his hand gripping the hilt of his sword, momentarily unsure whether to advance or retreat.
If he retreated, he would be unwilling. If he advanced, he could not bear the consequences.
Seeing this, Gu Jiusi hurried forward and said in a low voice, "My lord, let's first secure the release of the remaining people. We can make further plans later."
"Jiusi is right," Zhou Ye urgently added. "Father, preserving the lives of those still alive is what matters now."
Zhou Gaolang said nothing, his lips trembling as he tried several times to speak but could not form words.
Seeing him overcome with grief, Zhou Ye quickly said, "Wen Yi, we agree to the emperor's terms. But if we do not receive news of their release while stationed in Yuzhou, tell His Majesty he will bear the consequences!"
"Good," Wen Yi replied with a laugh. "You may set off now."
The words were laced with sarcasm, but Zhou Ye had no time for verbal sparring. He stepped forward to lead Zhou Gaolang's horse and said cautiously, "Father, let's return."
As he spoke, he glanced once more at the city wall, his lips moving silently to form the words, "Wait for me."
After saying this, he turned away, not daring to look back again.
On the city wall, Qin Wanzhi quietly watched his retreating figure, her entire body trembling slightly, her eyes brimming with tears. Wen Yi glanced at her and chuckled, "Is there anything else you wish to say to your husband? I'm not an unreasonable man. If you have words, bid him a proper farewell."
With that, Wen Yi removed the cloth gagging her mouth, seemingly out of kindness, and said, "Speak. Say all you wish."
Qin Wanzhi remained silent. She took a step forward, as if to see that person more clearly.
She traced Zhou Ye's retreating figure with her gaze. He seemed no different from the first time they had met—still that gentle, even somewhat awkward young man. Watching him ride away, it felt like all the times she had seen him off since their marriage. Finally, she cried out loudly, "Zhou Ye!"For so long, she had never once obstructed his path, yet this time alone, she called out to stop him.
Zhou Ye turned around and saw the woman standing atop the city wall, her orange robes fluttering fiercely in the wind. He gazed at the high tower with some confusion, then heard her scream: "Don't go to Yuzhou!"
At these words, everyone's expressions shifted dramatically. Guards immediately rushed to seize her, but Qin Wan Zhi moved faster. No one knew when she had cut the ropes—with a sudden struggle, she broke free, embraced Zhou Ping, and leaped down from the city wall.
Zhou Ye watched as the figure in orange plummeted down like a butterfly. His eyes widened in horror, and without a moment's hesitation, he spurred his horse forward.
Ye Shi'an tried to stop him but only managed to cry out, "No..."
But Gu Jiusi was faster than Ye Shi'an. Sword in hand, he followed closely behind Zhou Ye, charging forward almost simultaneously while shouting, "Raise shields! Advance!"
In that brief moment, arrows rained down like a storm. Gu Jiusi hacked away at the stray arrows around Zhou Ye, staying close to his side. But Zhou Ye had completely forgotten everything around him; his eyes were fixed solely on the woman falling from the city wall.
Qin Wan Zhi crashed heavily to the ground, the sound of shattering bones almost audible. Zhou Ping, whom she had shielded in front of her, was rendered speechless, trembling as he stared blankly at the sky, momentarily paralyzed.
Gu Jiusi protected Zhou Ye as they rushed to Qin Wan Zhi's side. The first wave of arrows ceased, and the gates of Linfen City swung open. Soldiers surged out with weapons drawn. Gu Jiusi stood alone in front of Zhou Ye, facing the oncoming troops, and roared, "Halt!"
His commanding shout momentarily stunned the charging soldiers, but it was only a brief respite. War drums thundered again, and the soldiers pressed forward. Gu Jiusi stood guard before Zhou Ye, blocking all who approached. Just then, Ye Shi'an arrived with the first wave of guards, forming a protective barrier around Zhou Ye.
The clash of weapons and cries of battle filled the air, but Zhou Ye paid no heed. He shoved Zhou Ping aside and knelt before Qin Wan Zhi. Gu Jiusi pulled Zhou Ping behind him, shielding him.
Qin Wan Zhi lay in a pool of blood, her face pale. She smiled weakly at Zhou Ye.
Zhou Ye was speechless, torn between panic and fear. His hands trembled as he reached for her, unsure where to touch. He gazed at her in desperation, tears streaming down his face in large drops. He seemed to want to say something but could only utter short, broken sounds—"Ah... ah..."
Qin Wan Zhi, however, remained remarkably composed. With great effort, she raised a trembling hand and clasped his.
The moment their hands touched, Zhou Ye froze. He stared at her, dumbstruck, as Qin Wan Zhi managed a faint smile and whispered hoarsely, "Am I... not pretty anymore...?"
Zhou Ye said nothing, his tears falling like rain as he looked at her.
Gu Jiusi fought desperately against any soldier who tried to approach, blood splattering around him. Yet he never once urged Zhou Ye to stand. He merely stood guard, protecting him, ensuring he could have this final moment of farewell in peace.
Qin Wan Zhi felt her vision darkening. She breathed softly, "Don't be sad... In this life... I've been very happy..."
"They wanted... to trick you... into going to Yuzhou... You would have died... would have died..."
"I wouldn't have..." Zhou Ye finally spoke, his voice trembling. "I would have found a way."
"Re... really?" Qin Wan Zhi struggled to smile. She released his hand and reached out to him. Zhou Ye understood her meaning. He bent down and gathered her into his arms.
Many of her bones were broken, and his touch brought her pain, but she craved the warmth of his embrace too much to let go.
At the beginning of this tumultuous era, her family had been destroyed, and she had traveled alone to Youzhou. She had thought the eldest son of the Zhou family would not acknowledge their engagement, that he would not marry a lone orphan like her. But he had acknowledged it. And he had married her. With eight bearers and a grand sedan chair, he formally married her through proper matchmaking and brought her into the Zhou residence. On their wedding night, when he lifted her bridal veil, he would still stammer and say to her, "Don't... don't be afraid. I... I will treat you well."
That warmth belonged solely to him, and that light belonged solely to her.
This light illuminated her life, making her feel that all the hardships in life were not hardships, but rather the price to pay for this lifetime and this encounter with him.
Clutching the front of his robe, she murmured softly, "A Ye, don't let me down..."
"Live well..." Blood gushed from her mouth, "Live well..."
Live as you wish.
Live as passionately and vibrantly as the young man she first met, who spiritedly told her, "I am willing to dedicate my life's efforts to seek a peaceful and prosperous era, so that the people may live in peace and health."
Let him never lose his edge, never cool his passion, always hold a bright and brilliant world in his heart, shining upon all directions.
This was her Zhou Ye, her husband.
But she could no longer speak these words. She lost her strength, closed her eyes, and fell silent forever.
Her hand slipped from his chest. He pressed her hand against his own chest, his body trembling as he suppressed his sobs. It was as if he feared his cries would disturb her, or as if he refused to acknowledge this separation, unwilling to let this sorrow be known.
The chaos of war around them, the city gates flung open, the rain of arrows, the cataclysmic upheavals—none of it seemed to matter anymore.
Zhou Gaolang charged ahead on his horse, leading Ye Shi'an and others at the front. Ye Shi'an methodically directed the troops following them, coordinating with Zhou Gaolang to use a battering ram to break open the city gates.
In his grief, Zhou Gaolang pursued Wen Yi recklessly, shouting loudly, "Wen Yi, stop right there!"
This sharp cry seemed to startle Zhou Ye awake. His eyelashes fluttered as he lifted his head and looked toward Zhou Gaolang, who was chasing Wen Yi inside the city gates. Slowly, he laid Qin Wan Zhi down and hoarsely instructed the soldiers beside him, "Protect her well."
With that, he charged fiercely into the city.
Gu Jiusi followed closely behind. Zhou Ye, as if gathering all his strength, ran forward recklessly. He raised his blade and slit a soldier's throat, seizing the soldier's quiver. Then, while chasing ahead, he lifted his bow and fired three consecutive arrows at Wen Yi.
Wen Yi sidestepped to avoid Zhou Ye's arrows, slowing his pace. At that moment, Gu Jiusi also grabbed someone's quiver, moved along the wall, raised his bow, and chased after Wen Yi, shooting arrows as he went.
Gu Jiusi traversed the eaves of the walls, Wen Yi dashed through the crowd, and Zhou Ye followed closely behind. Seeing them in pursuit, Zhou Gaolang turned back and fought his way up the city walls.
Standing at a high point, Gu Jiusi glanced at the direction Wen Yi was fleeing and immediately changed course.
Wen Yi ran into an alley, only to find Gu Jiusi standing there, holding a long sword and watching him calmly.
Wen Yi turned around and saw Zhou Ye blocking the alley's entrance.
Zhou Ye advanced toward Wen Yi, who stepped back, panting and laughing, "For two such esteemed figures to stoop to chasing down a mere guard like me—what an honor indeed."
Before he could finish, Gu Jiusi swiftly locked his throat and pinned him against the wall, coldly demanding, "Was it Luo Zishang who ordered you to kill them?"
"No..."Wen Yi struggled desperately as Zhou Ye drew his sword and pinned the hand attempting to ambush him against the wall, coldly stating, "Tell the truth."
Wen Yi panted, refusing to speak. Zhou Ye raised his hand and severed his kneecap. Wen Yi screamed in agony, instantly losing his ability to bear weight. Gu Jiusi, still gripping his throat, pressed on, "Luo Zishang ordered you to kill them because he didn’t want Lord Zhou to go to Yuzhou, right?"
Wen Yi remained defiant, gritting his teeth and struggling fiercely, only saying, "Just kill me."
"Luo Zishang doesn’t want Lord Zhou in Yuzhou because he hopes Lord Zhou will attack the Eastern Capital and fight Fan Yu to a stalemate. So, Luo Zishang made a pact with Liu Xingzhi, didn’t he?!"
"No..." A flicker of panic flashed in Wen Yi’s eyes, but he quickly masked it, continuing, "What nonsense are you talking?"
"Still not telling the truth!"
Gu Jiusi slammed Wen Yi’s head against the wall, threw him to the ground, and pointed his sword at him. "So, what exactly is Luo Zishang’s scheme with the Yellow River repairs?"
"Scheme?" Wen Yi laughed. "My lord acts for the country and its people, and you accuse him of scheming?"
No sooner had he spoken than Zhou Ye slapped him, then grabbed his hair, coldly demanding, "What did he tamper with in the Yellow River?"
Wen Yi stayed silent, staring intently at Zhou Ye. From the man’s gaze, he knew he wouldn’t survive the day. He looked at Zhou Ye and slowly smiled. "Pitiful."
Zhou Ye said nothing, his eyes fixed on Wen Yi, who chuckled, "Your wife gave her life for the world, yet in the future, sitting on the golden throne, I fear..."
Before he could finish, Gu Jiusi thrust his sword through Wen Yi from behind. Wen Yi turned his head to look at Gu Jiusi, about to speak, when Gu Jiusi decisively delivered a second strike.
Zhou Ye looked up at Gu Jiusi, who calmly explained, "He probably doesn’t know anything."
"You’re afraid of what he might say."
Zhou Ye laughed, his eyes filled with mockery. "You’re afraid his words would be too much for me to bear."
Gu Jiusi remained silent. Zhou Ye gazed at him steadily. "You think I’m pitiful too."
"Brother Zhou..."
"Don’t call me that."
Zhou Ye lowered his head, turned away, straightened his back, and strode forward through the blood-soaked ground. Gu Jiusi couldn’t find words; he could only follow silently behind.
By then, Zhou Gaolang had already taken Linfen. Zhou Ye asked the soldiers and went straight to the official residence to find him.
The residence was crowded with people. As Gu Jiusi followed Zhou Ye inside, they heard weeping from within even before reaching the door. Zhou Ye paused, as if afraid to take another step, but after a moment, he resolved to move forward.
Each step was agonizing, bringing him closer to the sounds of grief.
Upon entering, he saw two bodies lying on the ground. Zhou Gaolang was collapsed over Zhou Madam, weeping uncontrollably without regard for decorum.
Those nearby noticed Zhou Ye’s arrival and turned to look at him. He held his sword, his gaze falling on Qin Wan Zhi, who lay to the side.
He stared quietly at Qin Wan Zhi, took a deep breath, and then addressed the weeping Zhou Gaolang, "Father, let’s prepare the coffins first."Zhou Gaolang wept as he nodded. Those nearby went to fetch coffins, and everyone watched as Zhou Gaolang and Zhou Ye personally placed the bodies inside. Zhou Gaolang was overcome with grief, while Zhou Ye displayed an unexpected composure. He laid Qin Wan Zhi into the coffin, gazing at her quietly for a long time before taking her hand and gently kissing it.
"I will avenge you," he said hoarsely.
He would surely avenge her.
After speaking, he closed the coffin lid himself. The moment it shut, Zhou Ye looked up and met Zhou Gaolang’s eyes across from him. Zhou Gaolang, having wept his fill, seemed to have aged suddenly. He beckoned, and Zhou Ye went over to support him. "Set up the mourning hall," Zhou Gaolang said in a low, raspy voice. "Everyone should rest for now. Shi An, Jiusi." He called out to them, and Gu Jiusi and Ye Shi’an immediately responded. "One of you arrange the mourning hall, the other go check on Ping’er," he instructed softly.
They acknowledged the orders, and Zhou Gaolang and Zhou Ye walked away.
Only after the two had disappeared did Ye Shi’an speak. "I’ll handle the mourning hall. You go see how the second young master is doing."
Gu Jiusi agreed, his expression heavy. Ye Shi’an glanced at him and added, "Don’t overthink it. The final decisions aren’t ours to make. We’ll follow Lord Zhou’s instructions."
"What if he’s wrong?" Gu Jiusi frowned.
Ye Shi’an met his gaze calmly. "You can choose not to act."
Gu Jiusi pressed his lips together and ultimately said nothing. He bid farewell to Ye Shi’an and headed to Zhou Ping’s room.
Zhou Ping had been shielded by Qin Wan Zhi when he fell from the city wall. Being young and small-boned, he had escaped with only minor scrapes. When Gu Jiusi entered, Zhou Ping lay in bed, staring blankly at the canopy. Though only eight or nine years old, he carried himself like an adult.
Gu Jiusi approached gently. "Second Young Master, how are you feeling?"
Zhou Ping remained silent, his eyes fixed upward. Assuming he was still in shock, Gu Jiusi said nothing more and stepped forward to adjust his blankets. After a long pause, Zhou Ping’s gaze shifted to him. "They’re all dead," he stated flatly.
Gu Jiusi paused. Though young, Zhou Ping understood everything clearly. After a moment’s thought, Gu Jiusi replied, "There’s no need to worry, Second Young Master. Your father and brother will protect you from now on."
"Will they die too?" Zhou Ping’s voice trembled.
Gu Jiusi looked at him earnestly. "No, they won’t."
"Will they avenge Mother and Sister-in-Law?"
The question made Gu Jiusi frown. He weighed his words carefully. "Second Young Master, you’re still too young…"
"If they go to avenge them," Zhou Ping pressed on, "can I join the battlefield?"
"What would you do there?" Gu Jiusi asked, puzzled.
Zhou Ping clutched Gu Jiusi’s sleeve and declared with solemn determination, "Avenge them."
Gu Jiusi was stunned. In that moment, he understood—when even a child is shrouded in hatred, nothing but bloodshed can wash it away.
