Yan Chi raised his hand to embrace Qin Guan, turning his head as he asked, "Did you truly think I wouldn’t return?"
Qin Guan shifted her gaze to Yan Chi. Earlier, in front of so many people, she had quickly suppressed her emotions. Now, she simply wanted to look at Yan Chi properly. It had been over half a month since they last saw each other, and Yan Chi seemed slightly thinner, which made his features appear even more profound and handsome. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, stubble lined his lips, and a weathered, rugged aura lingered at the corners of his brows and eyes. As Qin Guan observed him, a certain place in her heart grew increasingly stirred. "Bai Feng received news that Qianzhou had already fallen, so I thought you’d likely spend the New Year there."
Yan Chi was also carefully tracing the lines of Qin Guan’s brows and eyes. Hearing this, he chuckled, "Everything in Qianzhou has been settled. Tomorrow is the New Year, and since I made you a promise, there’s no way I would break it. If I failed to keep my word this time, how could you ever trust me again?"
Qin Guan couldn’t help but laugh at his words, leaning into the crook of Yan Chi’s arm. "Even if you truly couldn’t return, I wouldn’t blame you. Qianzhou is of utmost importance—I would naturally understand. I only worry whether you’ve been injured. Everything else should be secondary to the bigger picture."
Yan Chi tightened his arm around Qin Guan’s waist, his eyes filling with even more tenderness. "There is no ‘bigger picture’ that outweighs this. Making a promise and failing to keep it would be my fault. Everything has room for adjustment. If I let you suffer for the sake of other matters, wouldn’t that be putting the cart before the horse?"
Warmth flooded Qin Guan’s heart. Yan Chi then asked, "What have you been up to these past few days?"
Qin Guan smiled. "I haven’t been idle in this garden—do you really want to hear? It’s a long story."
Yan Chi raised an eyebrow. "Go on. These past few days in Qianzhou have been hectic, with constant travel from place to place. The letters Bai Feng sent had to follow me through several stops before reaching me. The two letters I received were from two days after I left. The others must have been sent elsewhere."
Qin Guan sighed, her heart aching even more for him. "Two days after you left, a murder occurred in the garden. The legitimate son of the Lu family’s second branch died."
Yan Chi frowned slightly. "How could a murder happen here?!"
This was the Lu family’s own garden, and everyone here was part of the Lu family. Lu You Xin was known for his strict governance and discipline. Yan Chi never imagined a murder could occur here! He instinctively held Qin Guan’s waist tighter, thinking to himself that nowhere in the world was absolutely safe. If a murder on White Deer Isle had happened near Qin Guan, if she had been targeted… Yan Chi’s heart clenched, and he dared not dwell on the thought.
"What caused it? What happened next?"
At his question, Qin Guan replied, "It all started with the mine disaster in the Lu family’s fifth branch…"
Noticing Yan Chi’s tension, Qin Guan recounted the events in detail. As they walked and talked, they arrived at the Lotus Pavilion. By then, Qin Guan had roughly finished her account. The more Yan Chi listened, the deeper his frown became. Although the case had nothing to do with Qin Guan and she had been well protected by Lu You Xin, he still felt a sense of unease. Just as Qin Guan was mentioning the father and son of the fifth branch, they reached the Lotus Pavilion, and she stopped. "Let me help you bathe and change first. We can continue later."Yan Chi had been too busy to find time for himself these past few days and indeed needed to bathe first, so he nodded and followed Qin Guan's arrangements. After Qin Guan gave a series of instructions, the bathhouse was soon prepared. Fuling and Baiying exchanged a glance and quietly withdrew. Qin Guan fetched Yan Chi's clothes from outside and entered the bathhouse, only to find Yan Chi already undressing himself.
She paused mid-step, her face instantly flushing. After a moment's hesitation, she naturally stepped forward. Hearing her footsteps, Yan Chi turned around and caught sight of the blush on Qin Guan's cheeks, his eyes crinkling with amusement. Though they had been married for over a month, they had shared a bed for only a short while before he left Jianzhou. Now that he was back, it felt almost like before, so it was no wonder Qin Guan was shy. Yan Chi didn't point it out, simply continuing to remove his inner robe until he was completely bare before stepping into the bathtub.
Qin Guan kept her eyes lowered, her cheeks burning. Yan Chi's smile deepened as he leaned against the tub wall. Only then did Qin Guan approach to wash his hair. "You really weren't injured these past few days?"
Her soft fingertips massaged his temples and gently combed through his dark hair with care. Yan Chi relaxed comfortably, his eyes slightly closed. "No, we caught the Qianzhou garrison off guard. Jiang Heying is old now—no match for me. Don't worry."
Qin Guan let out a sigh of relief and checked Yan Chi's shoulders and back, finding no new wounds, though the old scars were still startling to see.
"The father and son from the fifth branch went to confess one after the other. What happened after that?"
With his eyes still closed, Yan Chi inquired about the murder case, and Qin Guan recounted the subsequent events.
Yan Chi nodded. "That was the right thing to do. No matter what, Aunt needed to know the truth. She distinguishes clearly between love and hate and isn't bound by rigid rules, so you needn't worry. I suspect she'll likely protect the fifth branch."
Qin Guan hummed in agreement, but Yan Chi suddenly sighed, took her hand, and kissed it. Startled, she asked, "What's wrong?"
Yan Chi said, "It seems I must keep you with me from now on to avoid complications. I thought the estate was perfectly secure, but I never expected such a thing to happen."
Qin Guan chuckled at this. "It's fine. This kind of thing doesn't frighten me."
Yan Chi pressed his lips together without saying more, released her hand, and quickly finished washing before standing up.
As he rose, Qin Guan's face flushed again, and she hurried to fetch a towel to dry him. By the time Yan Chi stepped out, her face felt as if it were on fire. Noticing her gaze darting everywhere but at him, Yan Chi grabbed her hand. "What should I do? These days, all I see when I open my eyes is battle, and when I sleep, my mind is filled with you."
Pulling Qin Guan in front of him, she inadvertently caught sight of something she shouldn't have, her face burning as if about to steam. "You..."
Yan Chi embraced her tightly, unable to resist kissing her. "I can't hold back anymore..."
Qin Guan, held firmly by the waist, felt her senses swaying as their lips and tongues entwined. "Outside... I've prepared... dinner for you... at least have some..."
Yan Chi paid no heed, turning and pressing her against a tall cabinet. Qin Guan, lost in passion, felt her legs grow weak, almost unable to stand. But just then, voices sounded from outside. Suddenly coming to her senses, she remembered—this was the bathhouse. How could they possibly do such a thing here...Qin Guan hastily pushed Yan Chi away. "Not now, not now. We still have to go out later."
Yan Chi looked at Qin Guan's hand pressed against his chest, barely restraining himself. Yet seeing Qin Guan's flustered expression, he could only laugh softly. Taking a deep breath, he fetched his clothes and dressed himself. "Fine, I'll let you have your way for now. But you won't escape later..."
Qin Guan caught her breath and straightened her collar before following Yan Chi out to dry his hair.
The outer chamber indeed had dinner prepared. Though Lu You Xin hadn't arranged an extravagant spread, she'd sent over an exquisite meal. After drying his hair and smelling the fragrant food, Yan Chi realized he was genuinely hungry and asked Qin Guan to join him. Once they finished eating, Yan Chi pulled Qin Guan into the inner chamber.
The moment they entered, Yan Chi drew Qin Guan into his embrace, kissing her while his hands wandered freely.
Qin Guan didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "I wanted to ask you about Qianzhou... I haven't bathed yet... I..."
As they spoke, they tumbled onto the bed. Yan Chi had missed Qin Guan so intensely that he now revealed the impatience of a youth. Regardless of what Qin Guan said, his hands never stopped moving. Soon, Qin Guan was breathless. "I... I really haven't bathed yet..."
Yan Chi initially paid no heed, but remembering Qin Guan's fastidious nature, he reluctantly paused. He planted a fierce kiss on her lips. "Then I'll wait for the time it takes an incense stick to burn."
Rolling off her, he lay atop the brocade quilt gasping. Qin Guan sat up, somewhat amused. "Then lie down properly first."
Yan Chi gazed at Qin Guan, obediently complying as he settled on the bed. Only then did Qin Guan leave the inner chamber.
Outside, Qin Guan bathed as usual, her expression calm though her movements were slightly hurried. When she returned after bathing, she found Yan Chi already fast asleep. Her heart instantly ached with tenderness, and she quietly approached to pull the brocade quilt over him. Though Yan Chi was usually alert, he merely opened his eyes briefly upon feeling the cover before closing them again upon seeing Qin Guan. Soon, his breathing grew deep and even.
Qin Guan smiled wryly, extinguished the lamp herself, and lay down beside Yan Chi.
Exhausted as Yan Chi was, Qin Guan felt little drowsiness. She stared at the canopy above, her heart tranquil and serene.
How different her state of mind felt with Yan Chi by her side!
Turning over in the darkness, Qin Guan studied Yan Chi's profile. His breathing was steady, and in sleep he lacked his usual imposing arrogance, instead radiating a delicate gentleness. After watching him for a while, she suddenly leaned over to kiss the corner of his mouth. Nestling against him with one arm draped lightly across his body, she closed her eyes while embracing him loosely. That night, Qin Guan finally dreamed of Yan Chi returning on horseback, full of tender affection.
Early the next morning, Qin Guan was awakened by damp, fervent kisses. Feeling nearly suffocated, she opened her eyes to see daylight filtering through the windows. The man who had slept soundly through the night now held her energetically, kissing her while his hands remained active.
Feeling warmth spread through her body, Qin Guan murmured, "How are you already awake?"
Yan Chi buried his face in her neck, whispering by her ear, "I've waited two hours... I truly couldn't bear it any longer..."Qin Guan's cheeks flushed slightly as Yan Chi's kisses began to fall upon her once more, delicate and persistent. When his lips captured her earlobe, she couldn't suppress a soft moan—this was her weakness, and Yan Chi had clearly long since mastered all her sensitive spots. Seeing that the sky outside was still not fully bright, Qin Guan simply surrendered to the rising tide of passion, allowing it to engulf her completely.
Yan Chi had truly missed Qin Guan intensely, and their entanglement lasted until daybreak. Outside, Fuling and Baiying, hearing the commotion from within, blushed and withdrew from the main hall. After a long wait, they finally heard movement from the inner chamber, followed by footsteps heading to the bathing room. A rustling sound persisted for some time before Yan Chi emerged, dressed in fresh robes, to summon breakfast. Fuling and Baiying hurriedly acknowledged the order, and Yan Chi returned to the inner chamber. A while later, Qin Guan appeared, languid and relaxed.
As the two sat together for their morning meal, Qin Guan finally broached the subject of Qianzhou. "I heard from Bai Feng that Jiang Heying has escaped. Is there any news of him now?"
Qin Guan knew full well that Yan Chi would never let Jiang Heying get away.
Sure enough, Yan Chi replied, "He fled south. The southern part of Qianzhou is mostly mountainous, with plenty of miasma and swamps, though in winter, these pose little threat. I've sent men in pursuit. We should have news soon."
Qin Guan nodded. "When do we depart for Shuoxi?"
Yan Chi said, "Before heading to Shuoxi, we must first meet with the prefect of Jianzhou."
Qin Guan then explained, "Yesterday, thinking you wouldn't return, I sent a letter to Xinlan. I've heard that many refugees from Qianzhou have flooded into Jianzhou City, and the city has stopped allowing outsiders to enter. With spring still far off, I fear many will perish. So, I asked her to intervene and advise her father. After the New Year, I plan to visit her in Jianzhou City—I doubt she'll refuse. As for when to meet her father, I'll wait for your return before deciding."
When Yao Xinlan was giving birth in Jinzhou, she nearly lost her life and was saved only by Qin Guan's efforts. Confident in this bond, Qin Guan was certain Yao Xinlan would not stand idly by.
Yan Chi frowned upon hearing this. "I had considered that as well, but you acted before I could."
Qin Guan smiled faintly. "While I'm here, this is all I can do."
Yan Chi's gaze softened with affection as he looked at her. "This is already more than enough."
After their meal, the hour was late. As it was New Year's Day and Yan Chi had rested through the night, he was in high spirits. By noon, the couple went to Wutong Garden to see Lu Youxin, who was busy arranging the evening's New Year feast. Seeing her occupied, Yan Chi took Qin Guan out of Wutong Garden and headed to Plum Garden. No longer concerned about his identity being exposed, and finding the weather splendid, he wished to stroll through the garden with Qin Guan. Upon entering Plum Garden, they were greeted by red plum blossoms against white snow, their delicate fragrance filling the air. As they walked, Yan Chi shared updates about Qianzhou.
"I've left Zhang Daoshi in Qianzhou. He is well-versed in astrology and the Path, and understands the needs of the people. For now, I've tasked him and Chu Yao with temporarily overseeing Qianzhou. Once the region is stabilized, I'll have him come to Shuoxi. He contributed greatly during the Qianzhou campaign, and I intend to put him to greater use in the future..."Qin Guan listened, her heart growing even more clear. Yan Chi then inquired about the details of Lu Jingcheng’s previous case. After Qin Guan finished recounting everything, Yan Chi frowned and said, “The Lu family today is no longer what it used to be. Even a century of noble prestige must decline one day. Though they are still called an aristocratic family, in the eyes of most, they are little different from ordinary merchants.”
Qin Guan nodded. “I’ve seen how troubled my aunt is by various matters, and I worry too. But the Lu family has an ancestral rule forbidding entry into officialdom…”
“That ancestral rule is over a hundred years old. If they remain inflexible now, the Lu family will likely be reduced to ordinary wealthy households.” After speaking, Yan Chi paused thoughtfully. “Later, I’ll speak with my aunt. As long as she is in charge, there is still some hope for the Lu family. If someone else takes over, I doubt anyone could sustain it.”
As they spoke, the two reached the side facing Wangyue Lake. Yan Chi looked up toward the lake and immediately spotted the painted boats and lanterns along the shore. Frowning, he asked, “What is this? Are people still boating on Wangyue Lake these days?”
These lanterns were close to White Deer Isle. Since a murder had occurred there, it seemed unlikely that such leisurely activities would take place. Yet the lanterns were undeniably real and clearly arranged with care. Qin Guan followed Yan Chi’s gaze and, after a moment’s hesitation, said, “Last night, when you returned, my aunt and I were here watching the lanterns. They were arranged by the Lu family’s Fifth Young Master.”
Yan Chi’s brow furrowed slightly. “The one from last night?”
Qin Guan nodded. A faint sense of displeasure stirred within Yan Chi.
Although they had only met briefly the previous night, that Lu Jingxiu did not seem like an ordinary wastrel. As a wealthy young master, it was unlikely he would go to such lengths merely to please Lu Youxin. Given that Lu Youxin had been watching the lanterns with Qin Guan, it was easy to guess for whom these lotus lanterns and floral displays were intended.
Yan Chi narrowed his eyes, suddenly recalling the hostility in Lu Jingxiu’s eyes when they first met the night before…
“What is this Fifth Young Master like?” Yan Chi asked calmly, his expression unchanged.
Qin Guan replied, “According to my aunt, he is somewhat straightforward and impulsive. Since he has been fond of martial arts since childhood, he prides himself on being a chivalrous hero and enjoys making friends. His character is relatively upright. During the incident with the fifth branch, he even questioned my identity. Later, my aunt revealed my background to him, which shows she trusts his character.”
Yan Chi nodded and did not press further. “How many days has it been since you last fed the deer?”
At this reminder, Qin Guan realized it had indeed been several days. “It snowed recently, so I haven’t gone. It must be four or five days now.”
Yan Chi smiled, took her hand, and said, “Then I’ll go with you.”
Delight shone in Qin Guan’s eyes as she walked step by step with Yan Chi toward the deer park. Their round trip and lingering stay in the deer park took quite some time. By the time they returned to Han Dan Hall, it was already afternoon. Qin Guan, who had been woken early by Yan Chi before she was fully rested and had since endured exertion and a half-day stroll, was now thoroughly fatigued. Seeing her exhaustion, Yan Chi insisted she take a short nap. Qin Guan, genuinely weary, went to rest for a while.
Yan Chi sat by the bedside, watching Qin Guan fall asleep before stepping out. Outside, Fuling and the others were waiting. Yan Chi glanced at Bai Feng and said, “Come with me.”
Bai Feng nodded and followed Yan Chi to the study in Han Dan Hall. Once inside, Yan Chi took a seat and asked, “What’s the story with that Lu Jingxiu?”Bai Feng's eyes flickered, momentarily uncertain whether to speak the truth. He had always recognized only Yan Chi as his master, but now he also held deep loyalty toward Qin Guan. If this matter were revealed, Bai Feng couldn't predict how Yan Chi would react. In that moment of hesitation, Yan Chi's gaze had already sharpened, and Bai Feng dared not conceal anything.
"Reporting to my lord, the fifth young master of the Lu family once intercepted the princess consort that night, mistakenly believing she had harmed the fourth young master. Later, seeing his unruly demeanor, the princess consort ordered Baiying to spar with him. The young man was thoroughly defeated by Baiying. After that incident, the fifth young master became remarkably deferential toward the princess consort—first coming to apologize, then sending plum blossoms as gifts. He even went to Jianzhou City to gather intelligence about Qianzhou specifically to share with the princess consort. Later, when the princess consort was treating Fifth Elder's illness, he claimed to be ill himself. Last night's lanterns on the lake were also arranged by him."
After speaking, Bai Feng couldn't suppress a shiver. He had witnessed Yan Chi's wrath before, but since meeting Qin Guan, Yan Chi's temper had softened considerably. Having not accompanied them to Qianzhou nor seen Yan Chi's lethal prowess on the battlefield, Bai Feng now trembled at the icy severity radiating from Yan Chi's eyes and expression.
"Is that all?" Yan Chi asked after a long pause.
Bai Feng bowed his head. "Yes. The princess consort declined the plum blossoms but did listen to the intelligence he gathered about Qianzhou and the northern regions. When he claimed illness, she prescribed medicine without even taking his pulse. Last night, she only attended the lantern viewing because Momma from the madam's household personally invited her. There was nothing beyond that."
Yan Chi narrowed his eyes slightly, frost gathering in their depths. Though he remained silent, the fury emanating from him was palpable and terrifying.
......
......
Qin Guan woke after sleeping for over half an hour, opening her eyes to find Yan Chi seated by the bed watching her. Their gazes met, and she thought she detected a shadow in his eyes, but when her drowsiness cleared, she saw only clarity and tenderness in his expression.
She couldn't help laughing softly. "Why are you sitting here watching me?"
Yan Chi leaned down, embracing her over the brocade quilt, and couldn't resist pecking her lips as he drew near. "It's been too long since I've properly looked at you. The more I see, the more beautiful you become—more enchanting than any celestial maiden..."
Qin Guan's laughter blossomed. "I see you're becoming increasingly skilled with sweet words."
Yan Chi brushed his nose against hers. "Every word comes from my heart. The most beautiful woman in all the world is my princess consort—is that not true?"
What woman doesn't delight in praise from the one she loves? Qin Guan was no exception, her smile deepening. "If we speak of beauty, Your Highness is in no way inferior to your consort."
The corners of Yan Chi's lips curved upward. "But can I make the princess consort fall for me?"
Qin Guan's smile widened, and she impulsively kissed the corner of his mouth before nodding. "Naturally."
Yan Chi laughed heartily and gave her a firm kiss. "Only women compare appearances—your husband speaks through blades!"
Mirth overflowed from Qin Guan's eyes. "Will you speak to me with blades too?"
A mischievous glint flashed in Yan Chi's eyes as he lowered his head to whisper in her ear. At his words, Qin Guan's face flushed crimson, and she couldn't help pounding his shoulder. "Don't say such things in broad daylight! You're truly..."
Yan Chi's laughter rumbled richly as he murmured, "Isn't it true? Who was it begging me to hurry this morning?"Qin Guan's face flushed even redder as she covered her eyes with one hand. "Stop talking! If you keep going, I won't get up at all!"
As she spoke, she tried to pull the brocade quilt over her face, but Yan Chi caught her hand and gave it a playful bite. "If you wish to retire now, that's fine too. Though it might be inconvenient later when my aunt comes to dine with us. But if the princess consort has made up her mind, I could go decline her visit right now. After all, I wasn't fully satisfied this morning..."
He even began pretending to change clothes, prompting Qin Guan to quickly grab his hand. "Alright, alright! I'm getting up! The sun has already set outside!"
Seeing her crimson cheeks, Yan Chi's smile widened. He first lowered his head to nuzzle against her cheek affectionately before scooping her up, quilt and all. "I'll help you dress."
With that, he rose and fetched Qin Guan's robe, truly helping her dress piece by piece. Qin Guan felt both shy and warm inside, complying as Yan Chi dressed her. After washing up, they stepped out of the inner chamber. Yan Chi asked as they walked, "Does your waist and legs still ache after napping?"
The warmth that had just faded from Qin Guan's cheeks returned, and she couldn't resist punching his arm again. "Stop talking nonsense!"
Yan Chi burst into laughter, holding her close as they headed toward the Warm Chamber. Upon entering, Qin Guan noticed several fresh red plum branches arranged in a porcelain vase on the table. Her eyes lit up. "Oh! When were these picked? I remember there was a green bamboo sprig here before."
Since the room lacked greenery, she had ordered some green bamboo cuttings a few days prior, but today they had been replaced by red plum blossoms!
Yan Chi smiled. "I went to speak with Aunt earlier and picked these on my way back. Do you like them?"
Qin Guan was delighted. Though she had often gathered plum blossoms for decoration before, these from Yan Chi felt special. She stepped closer. "Of course they're lovely. Some buds haven't even bloomed yet—they'll last a couple more days..."
Seeing her radiant smile, the shadows in Yan Chi's eyes lightened slightly. He wrapped an arm around her slender waist. "So it's true that all young women adore flowers."
Qin Guan chuckled. "You excel in warfare, yet you also gather blossoms..."
Yan Chi clicked his tongue lightly. "I studied literature in my youth and never fell behind. Did you think your husband was merely a brute?" He turned her to face him, gazing directly into her eyes. "Why assume I wouldn't pick flowers? I guessed you'd like them and wanted to gift you joy. Is it so surprising?"
Qin Guan blinked. "This is your first time, so naturally I'm surprised. You... don't seem the type for such refined gestures."
Yan Chi drew a sharp breath, scooping her up and spinning to sit on the warm divan. "Hmm? I command armies yet pluck flowers for you. Do you understand now?"
Seeing his insistence, Qin Guan collapsed laughing against his shoulder. "Alright, alright! I understand and I'll remember—no one is more accomplished in both arts and arms than my husband!"
Only then did Yan Chi release her. When Qin Guan tried to slip down and sit independently, he stubbornly refused. Noticing Fuling and others attending outside, she yielded and leaned against his chest to listen. Yan Chi said, "Earlier, I shared my concerns about the Lu clan with Aunt. She seemed thoughtful too. With the Great Zhou descending into chaos, we'll set this aside for now. Once peace is restored, that ancestral decree will likely be abolished. Then the Lu descendants can pursue civil or military examinations freely."
Qin Guan fully agreed. "In these times, merchants truly hold low status."
As they conversed, the setting sun dipped below the horizon. Soon, hurried footsteps echoed in the courtyard—Huang Momo had arrived with servants delivering the New Year's feast. Hearing the commotion, Qin Guan quickly slipped from Yan Chi's lap, straightened her dress, and went to greet them. Since Lu Youxin would be joining the meal, the side hall of the Lotus Pavilion was opened. Lu Youxin had prepared an extravagant spread, soon covering the entire table. Moreover, she thoughtfully arranged a separate table for Fuling and the other attendants. Just as the feast was laid out, Lu Youxin herself arrived at the Lotus Pavilion. As night fell, everyone took their seats.Only the three of them sat at the main table. Lu Youxin had Fuling and the others go eat, leaving only Huang Momo to attend to them.
"This is Plum Wine. Before you returned, I was just saying I’d have Guan’er join me for a couple of drinks. It’s a bit light for your taste, but since you’re the only male guest at the table today, you’ll have to indulge us two. Momma, pour the wine..."
Lu Youxin was in excellent spirits. Though the Wutong Courtyard had prepared a New Year’s feast, she hadn’t joined the other branches of the family for the meal. With so many incidents before the New Year, one could imagine the undercurrents at that table. Lu Youxin simply chose to ignore it, preferring to have a good chat with Yan Chi and Qin Guan.
Yan Chi didn’t mind what wine he drank. "Everything as Auntie arranges."
Huang Momo poured wine for the three of them. Qin Guan raised her cup and said, "Let me first toast to Auntie. May Auntie enjoy peace, health, and everything she wishes for in the New Year."
Lu Youxin lifted her cup. "Originally, seeing Chi’er was my greatest joy, but now I feel that having Guan’er come to White Deer Isle is my true fortune. Guan’er, I won’t say much, but I’m deeply grateful to you for all that has happened. I’m also very happy to see the strong bond between you and Chi’er. From now on, you two must remain united in heart and purpose."
After saying this, Lu Youxin drained her cup in one go. Qin Guan, holding her cup with both hands, first took a small sip to taste it, then finished the rest. Yan Chi didn’t try to stop her from drinking so much, merely watching with a faint smile in his eyes. After Qin Guan offered her toast, Yan Chi also raised a cup in tribute. Lu Youxin’s eyes reddened slightly. "I have no children of my own, but now I see you both as my own. Chi’er, you must treat Guan’er well from now on. Guan’er has already promised me that when you have children in the future, you’ll bring me over to care for my little grand-nephew and let me enjoy the joys of family life. I’ll remember these words..."
Yan Chi also raised his cup with both hands. "Auntie, rest assured. I respect you as I would my own mother, the princess consort."
The two drank together, and then Lu Youxin personally served dishes to both of them. The delicacies on the table had all been prepared under her instructions—aside from Jianzhou specialties, there were also essential dishes for northern New Year’s feasts. Yan Chi and Qin Guan savored the flavors. After three rounds of drinks, Qin Guan’s head was already feeling a bit dizzy.
Though Plum Wine is light, it is still wine. Drinking too much, especially with Qin Guan’s low tolerance, naturally went to her head. Not just Qin Guan—even Lu Youxin was feeling a bit lightheaded. "Chi’er, Guan’er, you’ve only been married a short while, so there’s no rush for children. But since neither of you have siblings, your generation should have more little ones. First, a boy, then a girl, then another boy, and another girl—ha ha ha—lined up in a row, each like a little snow doll. Just looking at them would make one unable to put them down! I’ve already prepared Longevity Locks early on..."
The more Lu Youxin spoke, the happier she became. Huang Momo watched from the side, both amused and exasperated. "Miss, don’t scare the princess consort. How did we jump to four children all at once?"
Lu Youxin waved her hand. "They’re young—why can’t they have that many? More children mean more blessings later... But... childbirth can be hard on the body, and conditions in Shuoxi aren’t ideal. Guan’er, if you become pregnant, you must tell me. I’ll personally go to Shuoxi to fetch you, with a grand procession to carry you back..."
Qin Guan was already somewhat dazed. Whatever Lu Youxin said, she just nodded. "Yes, alright. I’ll listen to whatever Auntie says."Yan Chi supported Qin Guan by the waist, and she leaned against him. Seeing that Lu Youxin was so drunk her words were slurring, Qin Guan instructed Huang Momo to help Lu Youxin back. Yan Chi also assisted Qin Guan to her feet, and the group stepped out of the side hall. Their eyes immediately fell on the bright red lanterns in the courtyard, which made Lu Youxin even more delighted. "It's New Year! It's New Year! Momma, give rewards—everyone gets a reward!"
Huang Momo chuckled, "Don't worry, everything is prepared!"
As she spoke, servants brought forward pouches of reward money and distributed them to everyone. Fuling had drunk a few cups of wine that night and was now vigorously shaking her money pouch, unable to contain her joy as she tugged at Baiying beside her. "Wow, so much money! I've never seen this much..."
Before Fuling could finish the word "money," she suddenly sensed something amiss. Blinking, she gazed blearily at the person in front of her. "Huh, Baiying, why do you look so much like your brother now?"
Bai Feng frowned at Fuling, who was swaying unsteadily while clutching his sleeve and speaking. He resisted the urge to pry her hand away and remained still. Beside him, Baiying sighed, stepped forward, and began guiding Fuling toward the room. Fuling glanced left at Baiying, then right at Bai Feng. "Huh, they really look identical..."
Her words were muddled, but she clung tightly to her money pouch. Bai Feng could only sigh in resignation.
After the rewards were distributed, Lu Youxin was thoroughly intoxicated and needed both Mommas Deng and Huang to support her as they left the Han Dan Pavilion. Qin Guan leaned against Yan Chi; though dazed, she was far from as disoriented as Lu Youxin or Fuling. A trace of innate restraint and calm seemed to remain in her, so even drunk, she neither cried nor fussed. Instead, she proactively wrapped her arms around Yan Chi's waist, her eyes gazing up at him with a dazed, foolish adoration. Yan Chi held her under the eaves and, noticing her unwavering stare, smiled. "What's wrong? Don't you recognize me?"
Qin Guan's cheeks were flushed red. She shook her head at his question. "I recognize you."
Yan Chi glanced at Bai Feng in the distance, who nodded and exited the courtyard. Yan Chi then scooped Qin Guan into his arms, facing her, and kissed her forehead. "Then tell me, who am I?"
Qin Guan nestled entirely against Yan Chi's chest but stubbornly lifted her gaze to him. "You... you are Prince Rui."
She seemed lucid enough, but only Yan Chi could see the vacant look in her eyes and knew she was drunk. He coaxed her further, "Am I just Prince Rui?"
"You... you are my husband..."
Yan Chi's heart melted with tenderness. He opened his outer robe and enveloped Qin Guan completely within his garment. "Am I good to you?"
Qin Guan nodded dopily. "Good..."
"Am I heroic?"
"Heroic—"
"Do I cherish you?"
"Cher— cherish—"
Her cheeks were flushed, her lips red. As she tilted her head up, her lips parted slightly, her breath hot and sweet with the scent of Plum Wine. Yan Chi gazed at her crimson lips and couldn't resist lowering his head to kiss her. The other servants in the courtyard had withdrawn, leaving only the sound of their breathing in the quiet. Qin Guan's petite frame was swallowed by Yan Chi's cloak, as if she had merged into his very being, nearly invisible from a distance.
After kissing her for a while, Yan Chi whispered something in her ear. Qin Guan paused briefly, a hint of shyness coloring her expression as she buried her face in his chest and murmured, "Comfortable, comfortable..."Yan Chi's body was heating up at an almost visible rate, yet he held Qin Guan tightly, as if waiting for something.
"Guan Guan, besides wanting me to pick flowers for you, what else would you like me to do?"
Qin Guan lifted her head from his embrace and looked at him in confusion. She hadn't understood his long question, but she saw the shimmering depth of Yan Chi's eyes, reflecting the lantern light from the corridor, now appearing brilliantly radiant. Qin Guan murmured softly, "St... stars..."
A slight curve touched Yan Chi's lips. "Do you want me to pluck the stars down for you?"
Qin Guan continued gazing at Yan Chi, hesitated for a moment, then shook her head before nodding again. Yan Chi kissed the tip of her nose. "Silly girl."
As his words faded, a sudden "whoosh" sounded, and a bright red firework soared from beyond the courtyard wall. It climbed into the sky and burst with a crackle, instantly scattering countless dazzling sparks across the dark night. Drawn by the commotion, Qin Guan immediately turned her head.
One, two, three—fireworks kept rising and exploding in the night sky, abruptly painting the dark expanse with vibrant colors. Qin Guan watched in a daze, feeling as though Yan Chi had brought the entire galaxy right before her eyes. Her heart warmed, and she couldn't help but embrace Yan Chi tightly. He leaned down and whispered in her ear, "Is it beautiful?"
Qin Guan nodded repeatedly. "Beautiful, so beautiful..."
The fireworks were incredibly loud, instantly drawing people from all over White Deer Isle. Everyone looked toward the Hibiscus Pavilion, but under the corridor eaves, Qin Guan felt as if the entire sky full of fireworks belonged to her alone. Yan Chi had prepared so many that even after watching for a long while, they hadn't finished. Staring blankly, she suddenly turned to face Yan Chi again. He looked down at her, puzzled. "What's wrong?"
The usual sharpness in Qin Guan's eyes was gone, replaced only by a gentle, captivated softness. Gazing into Yan Chi's eyes, she moved her hands from his waist and gently placed them over his eyes. Behind her, the night sky was still filled with colorful starlight, and now, all of it reflected in Yan Chi's pupils. The natural hue of his eyes was even clearer and darker than the night sky, making the stars within them appear exceptionally brilliant.
Qin Guan traced the corner of Yan Chi's eye and whispered softly, "Here... this is the most beautiful..."
Yan Chi was taken aback, a wave of burning emotion suddenly flooding his heart. The fireworks outside the courtyard hadn't ended, but he could wait no longer. In one swift motion, he scooped Qin Guan up into his arms, turned, and carried her into the room, closing the door behind them. He strode directly into the inner chamber, his steps quick. Qin Guan held onto his neck, her eyes fixed unblinkingly on him as if he were the only one she could see. Once inside, Yan Chi's hurried movements slowed. Gently, he laid her down on the bed, braced his hands on either side of her, leaned over her lightly, and stared into her eyes without blinking.Qin Guan's cheeks remained slightly flushed, yet there was no trace of shyness on her face. She seemed to know what was to come next, pausing briefly before placing her hands on Yan Chi's collar buttons. Her fingertips felt weak, and for a long moment, she couldn't undo them. Yan Chi, however, waited with immense patience. Qin Guan fumbled clumsily, unfastening each of Yan Chi's buttons one by one, then slipped her hands inside her inner robe. Without the slightest hesitation, she caressed Yan Chi's chest—though the act was intimate, her eyes remained utterly clear.
Yan Chi's throat bobbed urgently. "Guan Guan, do you know what we're about to do?"
Qin Guan blinked and nodded. Yan Chi's breath hitched, and she could no longer restrain herself, leaning in to press a kiss upon her.
Qin Guan appeared sober, but as Yan Chi's kiss deepened, her body began to tremble. She hastily tugged open Yan Chi's inner robe and embraced her without a hint of bashfulness. Yan Chi swept the bed curtains shut with one hand, and within moments, soft, sensual murmurs drifted from behind the drapes...
