A soft, warm body slipped into the sleeping bag. He heard the woman's voice again, then her scream. He quickly crawled out of the sleeping bag and saw a pair of eyes.
Her eyes are so bright, he thought. Like the clouds over the plateau—open and honest, untainted by a speck of dust.
None of the people he encountered afterward had eyes like hers, nor such a fragrant, soft, and huggable body. None were like her—still willing to examine him seriously under the hostile gazes of so many, offering a reassuring look and letting him hold her hand.
The person who claimed to be his assistant told him many things: his name, his age, how renowned a writer he was, how successful he had built his career empire. Yet to him, all of that—even the name "Yin Feng"—felt distant.
Then that feeling returned: the world around him was vast and hazy, like an icy sea threatening to drown him. He immediately thought of You Mingxu, how she knew everything, how she could conquer anything. Even the villain who had captured and robbed him was defeated by You Mingxu—though Gu Tiancheng peeing on her pants was pretty funny. So now, he only wanted to be with her, had to be with her. Thrown from a world he had completely forgotten into this strange, terrifying one, You Mingxu was the only treasure he could find, capable of sweeping away all demons and monsters so no one could laugh at or bully him.
—
You Mingxu had no idea this fool, muddled as he was, could harbor so many thoughts in his head. She slept like the dead, her soul and spirit finally settling back into place. When the sunlight pried her eyes open, it was already the next morning. The curtains in the room were drawn, and two nurses were quietly bustling about.
The person on the bed…
You Mingxu glanced over and smiled. Yin Feng was sprawled out in all directions, arms and legs splayed wide, the quilt kicked to the foot of the bed, with a blanket probably draped over his stomach by the nurses. He was snoring loudly, and even from several meters away, You Mingxu could see the drool stain on the pillow.
His figure was actually tall and straight. His face, handsome as an angel’s—thick, dark eyebrows, red lips, even the Adam’s apple on his neck carried a touch of masculinity.
But his overall demeanor and posture were truly a sight to behold.
You Mingxu turned to look at the assistant sitting by the window. Today, he wore a crisp shirt and trousers, paired with gold-rimmed glasses, and he smiled up at her.
You Mingxu asked the nurses for a disposable toothbrush and towel, washed up in the bathroom, and came out. The nurses had stepped away, and Yin Feng was still sleeping soundly. You Mingxu walked over and sat down in front of the assistant. "What should I call you?"
The assistant said, "My name is Chen Feng, Miss You. You can call me Xiao Chen."
You Mingxu said, "Tell me, what exactly happened?"
Chen Feng glanced at the person on the bed, his gaze calm and resolute. "I was once Teacher Yin’s devoted reader. Later, I earned his appreciation and became his assistant. We’ve worked together for three years. No one expected something like this to happen to him. Right now, he’s very dependent on you, and his words and actions might be quite willful and absurd. Please don’t mind it."
You Mingxu waved her hand and asked, "How exactly did the accident happen?"Chen Feng gave a bitter smile and said, "When Gu Tiancheng was committing those consecutive crimes earlier, Teacher Yin was very focused on the matter and even created a psychological profile of the criminal. He's always been one to do things his own way—he didn't even let me follow him and went to Tibet alone, probably wanting firsthand material. I knew he was following the police's search route, but who would have thought he'd run into trouble?"
"What did the doctor say?"
Chen Feng replied, "The physical injuries aren't a big problem. The trouble is with his brain. The doctor has already run tests—his intelligence hasn't changed, it's still very high. But his emotional intelligence and mental age are roughly equivalent to a seven or eight-year-old child. He might recover in the future, or he might not."
You Mingxu asked, "What kind of person was he before?"
Chen Feng picked up a folder from the table, took out two photos, and handed them to her. You Mingxu took them and froze for a moment.
Chen Feng said, "Teacher Yin graduated from Peking University's psychology department and currently works as a researcher while also writing books. To be honest, Teacher Yin used to have a very strong personality, with a powerful need to control everything. He had a bit of a temper, was very sharp, and always knew exactly what he wanted and how to get it. With all due respect, in his writing empire, he was like a god. And in fact, he achieved it. Not only were his books extremely popular, but his commercial ventures were also very successful. He was my idol."
In other words, this man had not only been highly intelligent but also emotionally astute, talented, and a very formidable, mature individual. You Mingxu looked at the photos in her hand and indeed saw a completely different man.
The photo was taken just as the man was getting out of a car. He wore a simple gray T-shirt that revealed his firm, lean arms. He had on a pair of sunglasses, his hair was stylishly groomed, and there was a shadow of stubble around his mouth and chin, like a cool male model straight out of a magazine.
You Mingxu stared for a few seconds before turning to look at the person on the bed. Yin Feng had, at some point, rolled over and was sleeping on his stomach, arms and legs splayed out like a frog, his face pressed into the pillow with a trace of drool at the corner of his mouth.
Chen Feng was also looking at his boss.
Both fell silent for a moment before You Mingxu returned the photos to him. "Why haven't I seen any of his family?"
Chen Feng answered, "Teacher Yin cut ties with his family years ago."
You Mingxu said, "I should go. When he wakes up later, you'll be able to keep him here, right? Don't let him sneak out again."
Chen Feng hurriedly said, "Wait, Miss You. Teacher Yin's stubbornness hasn't changed one bit from before. I'm afraid if he wakes up and doesn't see you, he'll do everything he can to find you. He's so clever—manipulating a few nurses would be child's play for him."
His expression was serious, but he spoke noticeably louder. You Mingxu glared at him angrily. This guy was too cunning! Sure enough, Yin Feng on the bed frowned, smacked his lips, kicked his legs a couple of times, and drowsily opened his eyes.
Chen Feng whispered, "You two talk. As long as you can handle him, you can leave anytime."
You Mingxu: "Get lost."
Chen Feng smiled, waved for the nurse to leave as well, and thoughtfully closed the door behind them.
Yin Feng scrambled up from the bed, and he and You Mingxu stared at each other wide-eyed. Looking at his messy hair and innocent, clear eyes, You Mingxu found it hard to connect him with the man in the photos. Before she could say anything, Yin Feng grinned, a big, wide smile spreading across his face. His snow-white teeth showed, and his eyes sparkled with brilliant light.
"You didn't leave!" he said. "The moment I opened my eyes, I saw You Mingxu! The moment I opened my eyes!"
You Mingxu was taken aback for a moment, avoiding his bright, shining gaze. She felt a little strange inside, thinking to herself: What's he so happy about? I'm leaving right away.
But Yin Feng sat cross-legged on the bed, looking up at her. His skin was too pale, his eyes too beautiful, and with that smile, he looked utterly and inexplicably sweet.
