Almost Lover

Chapter 8

Chapter 7: I'm Very Satisfied

Jian Xiangxiang returned to the dormitory and immediately collapsed into bed, fast asleep. Xia Qiaofeng was already awake but hadn't gotten up yet, currently curled up in bed reading a novel. The two of them perfectly embodied the ideal way to spend a weekend.

Ruan Yu, however, was like a tightly wound robot, moving nonstop. She packed her bag, grabbed her bus card, and headed out. Her destination was a residential area called "Huafu." She had looked up its exact location when submitting her resume on a part-time job website—it was in the Jinhua Road area, a well-known affluent neighborhood.

Her employer was a woman named Shen Bing. Ruan Yu had spoken to her once on the phone, and Shen Bing's voice was clear and forceful, her speech style crisp and decisive, without a hint of hesitation. Though they hadn’t met yet, Ruan Yu could easily imagine what a capable woman Shen Bing must be.

And indeed, the voice matched the person.

When Ruan Yu arrived at Villa No. 93 in the Huafu neighborhood, Shen Bing was already waiting for her.

Shen Bing wore a white blazer with matching wide-leg trousers, her stylish yet composed short hair completing the look of an elegant and formidable businesswoman.

"Ruan Yu, is it?"

As she greeted Ruan Yu, Shen Bing’s eyes swept over her from head to toe. Her gaze was as precise as an instrument, not even missing the wrinkles on Ruan Yu’s jeans.

Ruan Yu suddenly felt self-conscious. She nodded and said, "Hello."

Shen Bing suddenly smiled and gestured to the sofa across from her. "Don’t be nervous. Please, have a seat."

"Thank you."

"I’ve reviewed your resume, and I’m very satisfied. Now that I’ve met you in person, I’m also very satisfied."

The two instances of "satisfied" weighed heavily, leaving Ruan Yu at a loss. She couldn’t figure out what about her had pleased the seemingly very particular Ms. Shen Bing.

Could it be her plain and unadorned appearance?

"Since I have a flight to catch soon, I’ll keep this brief. My son has just entered his senior year of high school, and his grades in Chinese, math, and English are all subpar. I don’t expect you to help him make a sudden leap in performance—just improve his current state so he doesn’t fall further behind. Only then will he have a chance of getting into university next year."

"I understand."

"If you have no objections, the schedule will be Monday to Friday, two hours each evening from 7 to 9, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4 for three hours. The pay remains the same as the online listing. OK?"

"Alright."

"Let me introduce you to my son." Shen Bing stood up and headed toward the second floor.

Ruan Yu quickly followed.

The villa was spacious, and the interior decor and furnishings reflected the owner’s exceptional taste. Glancing at the spotless floor, Ruan Yu unconsciously stepped more carefully.

Her son’s room was on the right side of the hallway. Shen Bing walked over, knocked once, and then pushed the door open without waiting for a response.

Inside, a boy was doing a handstand against the corner of the wall. Hearing the noise, he quickly righted himself. Dressed in his school uniform, his face was flushed from the inverted position.

"Mom, how many times have I told you? Knock before entering."

"I did knock."

"Knocking isn’t just the literal action—it’s a whole process. First, you knock, then wait for a response, and then you open the door. OK?"

The way he said "OK" was identical to Shen Bing’s mannerisms—there was no doubt he was her biological son.Shen Bing ignored his protest and gestured sideways to Ruan Yu. "This is the tutor I mentioned to you before, Ruan Yu. Say hello."

Ruan Yu said, "Hello."

The boy glanced at her and gave a stiff nod.
