Chapter 62: The Madman
Ruan Yu couldn't sleep.
She spent the entire night staring at the ceiling, not counting sheep or dumplings, her mind completely occupied by tomorrow's finals. Even though she wasn't the one competing, she was incredibly nervous.
The next day, she woke up earlier than usual. After finishing her vocabulary review, she returned to her dorm and caught up on some sleep.
She had no classes in the morning, and for the afternoon session, she decided to skip.
When Jian Xiangxiang heard that Ruan Yu was skipping class, her expression instantly lit up with the satisfaction of seeing "a hopeless case finally coming to her senses."
"Ruan Ruan, when I first came to Yangshan, my sister told me that if you don’t fail a class, skip lectures, or fall in love in college, then your university life is basically wasted."
"Is this sister of yours even related to you by blood?"
"She might not be, but the logic stands. Anyway, failing a class is out of the question for you, but skipping a few lectures and falling in love? There’s still hope. Now that you’ve taken the first step, the next is romance—"
"Stop right there." Ruan Yu slipped on her cardigan and waved at the other two girls in the dorm. "I'm leaving."
She sidestepped Jian Xiangxiang and bolted out the door.
Ruan Yu headed to Huafu to meet up with Teng Hao, who had already arranged for a car to be waiting in his family’s courtyard.
As the two stepped out of the house and opened the car door, a chaotic piano melody assaulted their ears.
Teng Hao covered his ears in irritation.
"The neighbor’s a madman," he said.
"What do you mean?"
"Keeps butchering Beethoven all day long. At this rate, even Beethoven’s coffin won’t be able to stay shut."
"Complaints didn’t work?"
"Nope. Rumor has it that family’s got power and influence—property management doesn’t dare mess with them."
Ruan Yu clicked her tongue. Even if they were powerful, they shouldn’t act so recklessly. What good could come from alienating all the neighbors?
"Let’s go. Out of sight, out of mind."
"Yeah."
The car left Huafu and headed straight for Red Eagle Stadium.
Along the way, Teng Hao’s phone buzzed incessantly, flooded with messages.
"You didn’t skip class too, did you?" Ruan Yu asked.
"Nah, I took leave."
"Your teacher approved?" Senior year absences weren’t easy to get.
"Well, it’s just P.E. and self-study in the afternoon," Teng Hao said dismissively. "Besides, I promised my homeroom teacher I’d move up five spots in the next exam."
Ruan Yu: "..."
Who gave him the audacity? Who?!
The car pulled up outside Red Eagle Stadium. The crowd wasn’t as large as expected, but it was lively enough—mostly people from the street dance scene, dressed in increasingly hip-hop styles.
Compared to them, Ruan Yu’s outfit—fitted jeans, a cropped T-shirt, and a cardigan—was far too conventional and out of place. Thankfully, she had Teng Hao by her side.
As they walked in together, Teng Hao kept glancing at his phone and scanning their surroundings.
"Looking for someone?" Ruan Yu asked.
"Yeah. Xiao Qing and the others are here too. They said they’re nearby, but I don’t see them."
Just as Ruan Yu was about to help search, Teng Hao raised his hand toward the north.
"Found them?"
"Yeah, at the entrance." Teng Hao grabbed Ruan Yu’s wrist and pulled her forward.
Xiao Qing’s group of five stood by the stadium entrance.
Before Ruan Yu could get close, she spotted the girl talking to Zhou Xihe.
It was Fang Wan.
