Chapter 51: Playing Dirty
Teng Yi sat in the makeshift office behind the podium, legs crossed, watching Tian Cheng and a boy named Wang Jing sort through the cheer drafts on the table.
The clamor from the sports field outside made the room feel even quieter.
"You’ve got a competition coming up soon. Shouldn’t you be practicing instead of hanging around here?" Tian Cheng turned to ask.
"I’m here to soak in the competitive atmosphere."
"How is your competition anything like this sports meet?"
"What’s the difference?" Teng Yi fiddled with the stapler on the desk. "The spirit of competition is universal. Street dance is a sport too."
Tian Cheng had just nodded in agreement when the cloth door curtain was pushed aside, and a petite girl walked in. She greeted Tian Cheng, placed some documents on the table, then went over to Wang Jing.
"Wang Jing, that girl from your class, Ruan Yu, fainted," the girl said in a hushed tone, though everyone in the room heard her.
"Seriously?"
"Yeah, I saw them taking her to the infirmary."
Before Wang Jing could ask for details, Teng Yi abruptly stood up from his chair.
"Mr. Tian, I’m leaving."
Without waiting for a response, he pushed past the curtain and strode out.
Wang Jing wanted to follow, but he didn’t dare—broadcasting duty was about to start, and as the announcer, he couldn’t just slip away.
The sports field was still bustling with noise—announcements for event calls, starting gunshots, and cheers blending into a constant roar.
Teng Yi hurried down the stairs, cut through the passageway, and headed straight for the infirmary.
Inside, the only person was a female school doctor, who paused while closing the window when she saw Teng Yi approach.
"Another emergency?" she asked.
"No, I’m here to see someone." Teng Yi peered through the window—the room was empty.
"The girl who fainted during the 3,000-meter race?"
"Yeah."
"She woke up a while ago, rested here for a bit, and just left."
"Thanks."
Teng Yi turned back the way he came.
He thought about calling to check on her, but when he pulled out his phone, he realized he didn’t even have Ruan Yu’s contact. Teng Hao definitely would, but he was probably in class right now.
"Ruan Yu, you fainted on purpose, didn’t you? So you could badmouth me to Teacher Chen behind my back?"
A sharp accusation suddenly rang out from behind the equipment shed. The name made Teng Yi freeze mid-step. He turned and saw Ruan Yu standing under an osmanthus tree with a girl sporting a high ponytail.
Ruan Yu didn’t bother defending herself. She tried to step away, but the girl grabbed her arm.
"I’m talking to you! Answer me!"
"Fine. Yes."
"Hah, so you admit it?"
"I admit it. I fainted on purpose so I could complain about you behind your back—give you a taste of your own medicine."
"You—"
"How does it feel?"
The high-ponytailed girl’s retort died in her throat.
Ruan Yu’s expression was icy, her dark eyes sharp as gun barrels. "You Lexuan, let me make this clear—if you have a problem with me, come at me directly. But drag my roommates into it again, and I’ll make sure you regret it."
