Chapter 45 Little Fish
"What's Teng Yi doing here? Third-years don't need to participate in the sports meet," said Chen Manbai.
"Who knows? Maybe he's here to cheer for his girlfriend."
No sooner had Jian Xiangxiang spoken than a graceful figure came running toward the podium from across the field.
It was none other than Fang Wan.
"Damn, Jian Xiangxiang, is your mouth blessed or something? Whoever you mention shows up!" Chen Manbai clasped her hands in a gesture of admiration.
"Tell me who you want to see, and I'll summon them for you."
"I want to see money."
"Ugh, how can you be so materialistic? Don't you have any sweet, girlish dreams?"
Sweet, girlish dreams...
Ruan Yu couldn't help but smile bitterly.
She wanted to look away, but her gaze seemed glued to the railing of the podium. She watched as Fang Wan trotted up the steps and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Teng Yi. They were talking about something, Fang Wan gesturing animatedly like an excited child.
"Fang Wan's events were all yesterday, right? Teng Yi wasn't here yesterday either," Xia Qiaofeng wondered.
"Who knows? Forget about them," Chen Manbai ended the topic. "Eat something quick—Ruan Ruan's about to run the 3,000 meters."
"Right, right. Ruan Ruan, eat up. It's all up to you now." Jian Xiangxiang stuffed chocolate into Ruan Yu's hands while winking at her.
Just then, the registration desk announced the call for the women's 3,000-meter event.
Hearing her name, Ruan Yu stood up.
"I'm going," she said.
"Wait, we'll go with you."
The three quickly gathered their things from the ground and walked with her toward the registration area.
As they passed the podium, Ruan Yu couldn't resist glancing up. Fang Wan had already left at some point, but Teng Yi was still there, leaning against the railing in the same posture as before, like a king surveying his domain.
Ruan Yu wanted to escape his line of sight as quickly as possible, but this glance happened to meet his gaze head-on.
"Top Scholar!" Teng Yi called out.
Ruan Yu averted her eyes, pretending not to hear, but Jian Xiangxiang immediately reacted, nudging her with an elbow.
"Ruan Ruan, I think Teng Yi's calling you."
Left with no choice, Ruan Yu stopped and turned to face Teng Yi openly.
Her three roommates tactfully stepped away, leaving behind hushed giggles.
Teng Yi descended from the podium, taking three steps at a time as he strode toward her.
"Why are you avoiding me?"
"I'm not," Ruan Yu played dumb.
"Just now, when I called you."
Ruan Yu fell silent for a few seconds before suddenly lifting her chin and protesting softly, "Can you not call me 'Top Scholar' at school?"
"Why?"
"It's embarrassing."
Teng Yi's lips curled into a smile. "Then what should I call you?"
Before Ruan Yu could answer, the registration desk announced her name again, as if urging her.
"I have to go. We'll talk later." With that, she turned and walked away.
The colored flags lining the track fluttered noisily in the wind.
After a few steps, she suddenly heard him shout from behind.
"Little Fish, do your best!"Ruan Yu turned her head to look at him. Dressed head to toe in sleek black, he stood tall and straight on the dark red racetrack. The baseball cap shielded the light in his eyes but couldn't conceal his aura. The fluttering colored banners behind him suddenly fell silent, as if the entire world had become his quiet backdrop in that instant.
Only one sound remained in her ears.
"Go for it, Little Fish!"
