Almost Lover

Chapter 41

Chapter 39: Midnight Snack

Ruan Yu analyzed Teng Hao’s monthly exam papers, picking out his incorrect answers and summarizing the key knowledge points before explaining each problem to him one by one.

Two hours passed in the blink of an eye.

Around nine o’clock, Cai Hong knocked on the office door.

“The boss is treating everyone to a midnight snack. He wants you two to come along.”

Ruan Yu was about to decline when Teng Hao grabbed her and pulled her up. “Come on, let’s go grab a bite.”

The midnight snack consisted of skewers and beer.

A group of guys gathered around the large round table in the break room, chatting and drinking merrily. The moment Ruan Yu saw the scene, she froze, unsure where to stand.

“Over there.” Cai Hong pointed to a small round table nearby. “The boss told me to order some things girls like. I don’t really know what you girls enjoy, so I got some sweets. Go ahead and eat.”

“Cai Hong, girls are terrified of sweets—they’ll get fat,” Zhou Xihe chimed in. “No wonder you can’t get a girlfriend. You don’t understand women at all.”

“Shut up.”

Everyone burst into laughter.

Cai Hong glanced at the snow-skin mooncakes and mille-feuille desserts on the small table, then at Ruan Yu. “You’re not fat at all. Eat as much as you want. You’d still look good even if you gained a little weight.”

“Thank you.”

Ruan Yu was seated alone at the small table—just as she preferred.

She sat by the window, taking small bites of the mille-feuille. It was sweet, overwhelmingly so, leaving her at a loss.

When was the last time she had eaten something this sweet?

She couldn’t remember. It must have been a very, very long time ago.

Today, thanks to Teng Yi, she got to taste this sweetness again.

As she thought this, Ruan Yu scanned the crowd for Teng Yi, only to realize he wasn’t in the room.

“Huh? Where’s my brother?” Teng Hao also noticed.

“He’s not eating. He’s practicing,” Cai Hong said.

“The boss is way too hardworking.”

“The competition’s coming up soon. He’s under a lot of pressure.”

Competition? What competition?

Ruan Yu pricked up her ears, but by the time she tried to listen carefully, the conversation had already shifted topics.

The midnight snack lasted over half an hour. Zhou Xihe and the others seemed to be planning a second round and asked Ruan Yu if she wanted to join. She immediately shook her head and declined.

After leaving the training center, Teng Hao took a taxi home, while Ruan Yu headed to the bus stop. The night breeze was chilly, and the bus stop was deserted, with only two or three people scattered around, all engrossed in their phones.

Subconsciously, she reached for her own phone, only to realize it wasn’t in her bag.

Oh no. When did her phone go missing?

Ruan Yu immediately turned back.

She hadn’t used her phone on the way here, so it couldn’t have been lost along the way. It must still be in the office. She silently prayed that Teng Yi’s practice session wouldn’t end so soon—if the place was locked up, she’d be in trouble.

Luckily, when she arrived, the door was still open.

Ruan Yu sprinted up to the second floor. Sure enough, her phone was in the office, but it had been covered by the draft papers Teng Hao left behind, so she hadn’t noticed it when she left earlier. As the tension in her nerves eased, she realized she was drenched in cold sweat.

Losing her phone would have meant spending a fortune to replace it.

What a close call.

Just as she was feeling relieved, the music from the second-floor practice room suddenly stopped.

Was Teng Yi leaving?

Ruan Yu quietly approached the practice room door and peeked through the gap. What she saw left her stunned.
