Chapter 24: The Broadcasting Station
The relationship between Ruan Yu and Teng Hao gradually improved through their daily interactions. Teng Hao no longer acted as aloof as he had initially, and he had completely shed his prideful tendencies. If he didn’t know something, he admitted it outright and asked without hesitation. Ruan Yu, in turn, gave her all, wishing she could instantly unlock his potential and transfer everything she knew to him.
Though they hadn’t yet reached the point of confiding in each other, they had developed a tacit understanding of fighting side by side. She was delighted by this change, seeing it as the foundation for her peace of mind while juggling her part-time work.
However, she hadn’t seen Teng Yi in a long time. He seemed extremely busy, returning home late every night and leaving early on weekends, making himself scarce.
If they didn’t cross paths at home, there was even less chance of running into him at school.
Ruan Yu realized she often found herself inexplicably thinking about him.
This thought thoroughly alarmed her. She must be going crazy—how long had they even known each other? The number of times they’d met could be counted on one hand. They weren’t close at all, right?
Shaking off these distracting thoughts, she threw herself back into her quiet, diligent routine.
In late September, the school broadcasting station announced it was hiring two student broadcasters for paid positions. Generally, the wages for student work-study jobs weren’t substantial, but Ruan Yu signed up without hesitation. She wasn’t doing it for the money—she mainly wanted to seize this opportunity to hone her skills.
The competition for the broadcasting positions was fiercer than expected. Aside from students majoring in broadcasting and hosting, many from other disciplines were eager to try their luck.
After several rounds of interviews and eliminations, Ruan Yu and Wang Jing, the deputy class monitor from their cohort, made it to the final list.
When the results were announced, some rejoiced while others lamented. Ruan Yu remained calm—this outcome was within her expectations.
Early in the semester, Teacher Tian Cheng had praised Ruan Yu, saying her voice was smooth and pleasant, her pronunciation standard and clear, making it easy to listen to her. She was naturally suited for broadcasting and hosting. Her innate talent gave her confidence, and her diligent practice ensured she never lacked conviction. Moreover, she had certifications to back her up. By her freshman year, Ruan Yu had already obtained a Level 1-B Mandarin proficiency certificate—at the time, she was the only one in her entire grade to achieve that score.
Opportunities favor those who are prepared.
By all accounts, Ruan Yu was the best candidate for the broadcasting position.
Still, not everyone was convinced.
Rumor had it that after the results were announced, their class monitor, You Lexuan, had gone to protest to Teacher Tian Cheng. You Lexuan believed her abilities were no worse than Ruan Yu’s—she had merely underperformed during the Mandarin proficiency test, earning only a Level 2-A certificate. But past exam results shouldn’t affect the current position assessment. In the end, she even offered to work for the broadcasting station and the school for free, without pay.
Fortunately, Teacher Tian Cheng wasn’t swayed by her unreasonable demands and stuck to the original selection.
On Monday, Teacher Tian Cheng summoned Ruan Yu and Wang Jing to his office, saying he had something to discuss.
As Ruan Yu and Wang Jing reached the office door and pushed it open, Teng Yi happened to walk out. They hadn’t seen each other in over ten days. Caught off guard by the sudden encounter, Ruan Yu froze.Teng Yi wasn't alone; he was accompanied by another guy as they chatted. When he saw Ruan Yu, he showed a hint of surprise, but that was all—there were no other particular reactions. He simply nodded at her naturally before moving on.
