Chapter 12: The Campus Belle
There was a bus stop right outside Huafu Residential Area, with Bus 527 going directly to Yangshan University. Compared to her previous part-time job, the commute this time was relatively convenient.
After returning to campus, Ruan Yu spent the entire afternoon in the library. Despite having studied diligently on her own, she still felt overwhelmingly small when faced with the endless collection of books and the boundless knowledge within them.
This sense of insignificance and inadequacy drove her forward, never allowing her to slow down.
By the time she left the library, the sky had already darkened. The festive red lanterns from the anniversary celebration hadn’t been taken down yet, and at a certain time, the caretakers would light them all up. The bright red glow enveloped the campus, casting a cheerful light on the students coming and going.
For some reason, Ruan Yu felt that the festive atmosphere today was even more intense than during the actual anniversary celebration.
After walking for a while, she realized her intuition wasn’t wrong—today, there were noticeably more people wearing red on campus. As if chasing some trend, everyone had dug out their red clothes from the depths of their wardrobes, regardless of whether they were seasonally appropriate, and just threw them on.
The cafeteria was especially quiet on weekends, but even among the sparse crowd, flashes of red could still be seen.
It seemed Teng Yi and his crew had become the new fashion icons of the school.
Ruan Yu was speechless.
In today’s society, trends seemed to spread with alarming ease. But did wearing the same clothes as someone else make you that person? Not even close—it probably didn’t even come to one ten-thousandth. And worse, blindly following trends only made people look ridiculous.
After finishing her meal, she returned to the dorm. Jian Xiangxiang was sprawled on her bed, staring at her iPad with a troubled expression. When she saw Ruan Yu enter, she immediately waved her over.
"Ruan Ruan Ruan Ruan, come here quick! I need your help—my indecisiveness is acting up again."
"I thought you were going out to party?"
"They suddenly called a meeting, so plans are canceled."
Ruan Yu set down her bag and walked over.
On the iPad screen was an array of men’s perfumes.
"My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up, and I want to pick a cologne for him," Jian Xiangxiang said, pushing the iPad toward Ruan Yu. "Help me choose."
"Perfume for a guy?"
"Yeah." Jian Xiangxiang smirked meaningfully. "You wouldn’t believe how extra he is."
Ruan Yu turned her attention back to the screen—Armani, CK, Hermès, Davidoff… and many brands she had never even heard of. Each tiny bottle cost several hundred yuan.
That was more than a month’s worth of her living expenses.
"This is so expensive," Ruan Yu said.
"What’s expensive about it? You don’t know this, but for Teng Yi’s birthday, Fang Wan got him a watch as a gift—that thing cost thousands."
"Who’s Fang Wan?"
Jian Xiangxiang gave her a look of disbelief. "You don’t know Fang Wan? Ruan Ruan, you can’t just bury yourself in books all day. At this rate, you’re going to lose touch with campus life."
Ruan Yu didn’t argue, only repeated, "So who is she?"
"Qiaofeng," Jian Xiangxiang suddenly called out to Xia Qiaofeng, who was lying on her bed reading a novel. "Tell her who Fang Wan is."
"The campus belle," Xia Qiaofeng answered without looking up from her book.
"That’s not specific enough—let me elaborate." Jian Xiangxiang took over. "Fang Wan is Yangshan University’s campus belle, the goddess of the performing arts department, the only girl in the West Street Dance Crew, and most importantly—she’s Teng Yi’s girlfriend."
